Ruapuna Track Days

Hey guys, just wondering what the go is with track days at ruapuna, i heard rumours that the track was open most tuesdays and fridays. What is required in getting out there eg. costs, safety gear, licences etc.

Tuesdays and Fridays are test days, when not booked for private hire.

Costs depend if you are CCC club member or not. To get the full details you are best off phoning the track office directly 349 6003.

The day is usually run in sessions depending on how many and what types of cars/bikes/karts are there. ie saloons are usually not run with open wheelers unless there is only one of each and both parites agree to run on the track together. Bikes have their own session also. Usually breaks down to 20min session every hour.

You have to sign on and have a person who can keep an eye on you from Pit Wall (can raise alarm if there is an accident, and stop other cars on the track)

I have been before on Fridays, but I believe it is also available on some tuesdays.

It pays to call them on the day to make sure it is still free.

Costs are: $50 per half day for CCC members ($100 per half day for non-members)

You will also need:

Current Reg and WOF
Fire retardant clothing (100% cotton overalls are ok)
Fire extinguisher, fixed by a metal bracket & within reach of the driver.
A suitable helmet (full face motorbike helmet is fine).

Passengers are allowed so long as they have the safety gear.
Drivers are generally not allowed to pass other vehicles.
You can get away with getting a bit sideways, but they will probably get a bit shirty with you if you're spinning out all over the track.

You also need to have someone to be in the pit lane as an observer.

Usually theres one or two other people using it at the same time, so you will need to arrange with them who goes out when. Its usually ok to have a few of you out on the track at once, although motorbikes and cars cannot be out at the same time, as they use different routes through the track.

sounds like a heap of fun!! prob wont be able to get out there very often due to lack of money but keen to give it a crack. If anyone is headn out there sumtime in july could you flick me a txt on 027 4151737 as it would be good to have someone to race!!

Been meaning to take some time off work and hit a practice day for some time... Whenever I'm out there is always working at an actual Race Meet or driving in a Speed Event (or breaking my car at a Speed Event...)

Will be heading out there for one soon, after a few events I've tidied up my lines, just need some major work on my braking points...

I jus need to drive round the track there! i only ever cruised round there after a drag race, would help to know where the corners are! lol

You will probably find they won't let you "race" as such, but you should be able to follow each other round quite closely.

It is a pretty unique and fun experience though, and for anyone who has never been on a track I really recommend it.

The track surface is very even and nicely cambered compared to public roads and it makes for a very pleasurable drive, and seem to grip very well too. You will find yourself pushing harder as you get to know the track and the lines to take.

When is the next one?

Do they run the complete circuit, as probably need some practise as I have only ever run 1 round of OSCA there a few years ago but am hoping to do sports saloon this year.

22nd July is the next event. Yeah the full circuit is run, but so is variations excluding the dipper etc to mix it up a little. Best to give Logan a call for more details if needed, PM if you want his number.

usually we do 4-5 different courses made up from different variations of the circuits
2 goes at each course.
warmup lap then standing/flying timed lap then cooldown lap

next one is a day/night event
racing at night is quite fun... spinning out and losing where the track is heading not so fun

I was at Puke last month for the Enduro 6Hr.
Complusory practise on friday night.

So My first ever few laps of Puke were,
In the dark,
In the rain,
In a car I had never driven before,
with tow spotlights and no headlights,
and 1/2 the ripple strips were under water.

That was not fun. ( well a little bit, but scary as shit)

Unfortunatly my car also has no lights.
