Opinions vs Facts Caldina Gt-t

I was just sitting in my office, thinking about everything other than work. I was just wondering if anyone with an Auto/Tip GT-T had raced/dragged against a Manual GT-T. Whether that be at the lights or what, it doesnt matter.
How are they in terms of power onto the road, are they quite neck to neck, or does one go better in areas?

EDIT: This is in standard form, not modded - cos that just adds bias, cos no two setups will be the same.

Holy crap the GT-T Caldina is turning into the new 20V!!!

EVERYTHING Caldina has probably be covered on the forums previously if only you would learn how to use the SEARCH function...

Thanks for that - and yes, I have probably read every single post about the caldina gt-t on this forum.
You should really stop posting that up, as people who have posted here before would have no doubt seen that message before.
I do use the search function, I have sifted through many a thousands of posts on this site and have learnt a great deal.

This is not a question, who thinks the manual is better than the auto.
Just about every Tom Dick and Harry will probably say the manual is better cos autos suck, Autos have VSC and TRC etc etc, Manuals have LSD etc get hard get a manual blah blah blah, autos are for pussies. Yes I have read the posts.
This is a who has actually compared them side to side, or have driven both 1 after the other and have opinions of facts about them.

I know alot of people have dragged autos, and have done mods to make them launch better etc. Again I am looking for an unmodded comparison. Just off the mark, both going as fast as possible, what one would get to point x quicker, and why.

If you want to add your 2c to what you can do to improve it, go ahead.

I should have been more specific, but I was at work and didnt want to get busted browsing Toyspeed!

if you want to feel the differences urself, try turners auction. there were 5 gt-ts (manual and auto) on one of the auctions that i went to

auto takes off slower (if u dun care about the clutch in a manual that is) but I would imagine that's the only major difference between the two

Dont think there is a turners down here.

I have heard the clutches in the GT-T are quite heavy duty.... is it possible to change fast in the manual? May seem like a bit of a stupid question, but I remember when I worked at Toyota Parts PN the guys there (who were my age now) were getting GT-T's, and were saying things about the manuals and the Autos. I think the manuals were really rare back then, so it may have been speculation.

I know bugger all about the manuals, as I have never driven one.

arh, ic..
well the manuals I've driven were quite good in terms of changing gears, didn't need to force it into gear or anything. not sure about the clutches but i heard the same story as you did so it should be able to take more crap than other models :lol:

lol, Ive managed to stay side by side with a tiptronic caldina, and we both were allready on the move. And this was in my 20v :twisted:

lol, Both going hard out of course. The caldina did have the exhaust manifold problem tho..... But still :D

back on topic..... when I brought my slushy, we drove one manual and three slushies, wasn't all that inpressed with the manual to be honest, sure it's a manual, so it must be good, but was quite impressed with the changing of the auto, both in manual and auto manipulation, so thats the one we brought, and the manual was cheaper than what we ended up paying.

that said, do other people's auto hit the limiter in 1-2 and 2-3 shifting?

Well i might sound bias but the manuel i ended up buying was far better then the auto. Both were 98 gtts. The manuel just gets the power down quiker as the auto was a bit slow (maybe it was stuffed?) I gave my mate in rotorua a drive to compair to his auto and he now wants a manuel.

Plus you have more performance options with the manuel as in, lighten flywheels 8)

oh ok. Cool as. Thanks for the info.

OH, and why does the auto only go up to 3rd when its cold. Like if its cold and I need to go 100km/h straight away, its reving quite high before it changes to 4th.
I guess it muct be because of the auto oil temp or something, but why stay in 3rd??? surely doing higher revs when cold is bad bad bad!

I had a 20v ae101 fxgt with quite a few mods and it is not even in the same league as a gtt. Even with the leaky manifold a 20v wouldnt stand a chance.[/u][/quote]

I believe that the reluctance to change into 4th when the car is cold is to do with getting the catalytic converter up to temperature for emissions reasons.

At least that is the only reason that I could come up with.

Oh and for the record the manual caldina that I drove when I was looking at them had quite a heavy clutch and the box was a bit clonky, I wouldn't call it a sweet shifting transmission by any means. This would have been fine for me but I was worried about the wife having to drive it and she spends more time in it than me.

The clincher was the the ST246 only comes in auto :cry:

I will be up on the weekend of the 8th of July. Well I am coming up on the friday, as my brother in law is playing in a brass band - nationals or something.... not entirely sure. Anyway, we are staying over friday, and then saturday morning I am getting Tyres and Brakepads care of HRT, then getting a wheel alignment at 11:30. So if you are free I could meet you at like 2 or something, as I have to see brother in law etc off at the airport at 1.

RE the Manual Caldina. What I ment to say when I heard about the heavy clutch, was it had a heavy clutch and a heavy gearbox, like has been described on this post. The guy that was looking after me while I was at toyota, said it had something to do with the power, and toyota overengineering the box to keep it from breaking, or something. I cant remember the exact reason now. But like a said, I think the manuals were as rare as back then.

Would quite like to find out how to disable the VSC, just for shits and giggles, to see what a difference it makes off the mark. Wouldnt leave it off for driving around though I wouldnt think. By the sounds of it, the VSC has saved a nasty outcome of a few Toyspeeders.

Sorry, just to add to that, the Caldina was runing 91 aswell. Someone had put gas in it who didnt know it needed 98
