Noise coming from wheel

Postby femaleshopper » Fri Jun 16, 2006 12:37 pm

Hey Guys

Wondering if you could help with my question. I have a GTi 88 Rolla. Since I have had my WOF a noise comes from what i think is the left side of the car.

A knocking noise. It doesn't make a noise when accerating or braking, just when rolling. It gets worse when I turn to the right.

Is it a CV Joint?? If so are they easy to replace??

Thansk in advance

Sounds like a CV to me.

Not overly hard to do, just more of a PITA more than anything.

If you need parts then take a look at the thread Here

Could be a number of things
loose bolts holding shit together on that side
CV joint itself
wheelbearing

Since its when turning to the right, it could well be the CV.

Doing it yourself, 70$ and up depending on the quality of the joint.

Getting someone else to do it, dont expect change from $200.

Just a stupid thing, check the stud bolts on both front ends, my knocked when a couple were loose.

yup had the same thing happen to me - id be checking eveything is tight on the hub as well. normally when a cv is on its way it only knock's when you accelerate round a tight corner and it can/will get worse to the point where is will knock in a straight line. my cv blew before that started to happen tho.

My guess is the left inner CV joint. Whip the boot of it and make sure it has plenty of grease before taking it the a mech. If its dry then pack some more grease in there and see how you get on

could take it to a mechanic and ask them to see whats wrong and get a quote to fix it.... make sure they wont charge you to check it tho... then postup what they say and people will tell you if u can drive on it

just 1 option anyway.

have u looked under the car at all? if it is a CV quite possibly one of the black ribbed looking boots is split, check everywhere u can and see if you can spot any split boots

another option

simply

if its clicking around corners and in cronic situations on straights its a cv

if its a humming noise getting louder with speed its a wheel bearing

inner cvs hardly ever go, but the ae92s seem to have a problem with outer cv joints.
i would get it fixed before too long, otherwise you will be stuck with 0wheel drive like i did.

Warwick can get the parts in at a very good price, just order them in advance because they take awhile.

Got my wheel problem sorted. turns out the nuts were too long, therefore the wheels were wobbling. I don't recommend Firestone Tawa as they should of picked this up ages ago. And in this instance has caused damage to the wheel, where the nuts sit.

I had 1 washer on each wheel, nuts were too long so one wheel had washers put onto each nut, whereas one wheel only ahd nuts. This was a problem as the friction caused the nuts to dig into the wheel.

This means that any washer we put in will fold in.

I have changed the front and back wheels, so there isn't as much friction.

I did grind down the nuts, now no problems.
