60 degrees and 80 degrees oil temp

Postby TRDmod » Sun Jun 18, 2006 6:05 pm

i have a st205

my temp gauge used to always read 80 degrees normal to medium driving.

now, i have an oil cooler, it always reads to 60 degrees...

is this bad? i mean is it too cold? its way past the red line on the cold part of the gauge, but... is it too cold? or is it ok do you think? or is it better for the car that its running cooler?
Have you got the hots? for what's in the box with the dots? ..... 0800 30 40 50

You should probably run a thermostatically controlled oil cooler. Oil too cold is not good

I always had doubt that too cool is not good.
Colder oil has more viscosity but that is not really bad. (loss of small amount of power)
Colder oil does not burn as much.
Colder oil creates less sludge.
Colder oil = higher oil pressure.
Colder oil = less oil mist.
Colder oil = cooler pistons = less detonation
Colder oil = colder internals = less heat stress

While too hot could be more dangerous:

Hot oil = burns
Hot oil = less vsicousity = lower pressure = less lubrication
Hot oil = sludge
Hot oil = more oil mist
Hot oil = hot pistons = more detonation

So does anybody knows any real life problems running oil colder than usual? Especially in NZ (where genereally outside temperature does not go below 5'C). Don't forget that block/head still would be same temperature as without oil cooler, because the temp. is controlled by water thermostat, same goes for piston rings...
