Which block choice?

Postby FYADUP » Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:55 am

I was just wondering what block is better for a turbo application.
Im gonna buy a blacktop engine as a base and work from there.

Is the ZE block much stronger than a blacktop block because of oil squirters etc?

Also whats the difference in cranks? is the ZE crank stronger than a blacktop one? Will either of them shit themselves say being run at mid 200 kw's?

Two types of block, good one and not so good one. Bluetop = not good.

Any other block (so gze, silvertop, blacktop) are good, and afaik the blacktops have oil squirters too? If not, a silvertop/gze(later one) or a redtop with squirters would be the way to go.

But in saying that, i don't have squriters in my 4agte (early gze block).

Again, two cranks, bluetop(40mm journals) = shit and the rest.(42mm journals)

The rest are all the same (gze and blactkop and silver and redtop)

So any crank will do, and 200kw should be fine on a std crank.

I just re read your post.

I wouldnt buy a blacktop, as the rods are shit.

Get a old silvertop for a 1/5 the price and rebuild it, and if you wanted, slap a blacktop head of it. Get a rebuilt motor for about the price of a blacktop, there prices are a bit up there.

And the silvertop rods should handle that easy as long as they arnt revved out. Can get the old redtop/gze rods that are HUGE (i have them), but i wouldnt worry about them, as they are also way heavier.

Cheers for that Syk.

I knew about the blocks just didnt know wat the diff was, but now i do :D

i know about the blacktops, dont worry, Im gonna completely forge the bottom end with aftermarket pistons (ACL or Arias) and rods (Corillo or SAENZ). Also getting ARP rod and head bolts and prob gonna do sumfn to the head too. Valves n cams etc. (See what my budget alows:P)

Well my mate wants my silvertop i have for 600, and a good blacktop head be easily 200+ and if i buy a complete motor which ive seen one for about 1100 with gearbox n shit then ill just sell the bits i dont need.

I cant remember, but can u fit a GTZ LSD gearbox to a to a 20 valve? Sorry for soundn stupid but i cant remember, its been a while
ahaha. As i have the box, HD clutch and flywheel for a GTZ.

yep box fits mint,

Get a silvertop bottom end, or a high comp gze bottom, or a redtop, as they are all basically the same, with the good crank and oil squirters.

Pistons and rods... that wont effect you due to your aftermarket, blacktop pistons better while rods worse than silvertop

All except the bluetop. Which has a smaller crank pin and you probably dont want to go near. If I was selecting a crank for something of this ilk I'd attempt to get as low mileage as possible... and get it crack tested!!

With 200kw I doubt you could run blacktop pistons. However the ZE pistons are forged and coated stock. A damn good choice for turbo applications.
