Fwd toyota handbrakes suck..why?

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Thu Jun 22, 2006 1:14 pm

Both my ae92 and my brothers ep82 have reallllly crap handbrakes.

Even my ae86 has a crap handbrake.

Why do toyota's have such crap handbrakes??

I've tried different pads, new centre cable on the ae92 and adjusted the lever. It barely holds the car, if there is a slight slope it won't hold it at all.

Is it stretched cables or what?

The handbrakes in both my MR2's suck. I can't even park in my own driveway cause its too steep!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Hmm same thing in the Corona as well, from memory they (Corona) are set at about 6 or 7 clicks from factory and do require adjusting from time to time & they are a right royal PITA to adjust from inside the cabin too

I know that dont help, but yes it seems to be quite a common thing

Park facing down-hill. Thats the only way my 101's will sit on the driveway.

Although I have no problems with steep drive ways, in both of my cars handbrakes are crap for doing handbrake turns, it works great as just park brake. They need adjusting and sometimes cleaning/lubing the the screw/ratchet mechanism as most of the time it siezes up and that is why they don't hold on steep roads.

AE82 GT was bad, AW11 was shocking, but strangely the AE92 is actually not bad. It's not great, but it isn't useless.

mine's crap also. The only thing I can think of is to put rear pads in that work really well when cold. Might stuff up the front/rear brake bias when cold though.

my ke35 handbrake was sh*t until I replaced the diff with an ae85 setup. Although I kept my original handbrake cables, they were just setup so they were nice and tight with no slack anywhere.

they also had to be set up so they braked evenly; one side was pulling more than the other. now I can pull handbrakies easy!

You will proberaly find that they are not that great becasuse they disk rear ends, drum brakes are good hand brakes/parking brakes, alot of biggger cars have disks for stopping and a internal drum brake for the hand brake/park brake

My MR2's one wasnt bad, and the wagon's one is bloody brilliant. The sedan is a bit lacking atm, but thats just due to the cable being stretched to all buggery.
