Is that question for any particular make?

If it was a Mitsubishi auto, I wouldn't consider it unless it had a tip top service record showing it has been flushed with Mitsubishi transmission fluid every 50,000kms.

But generally speaking, if its slow to select a gear, or harsh at shifting, or sometimes pops out of overdrive or top gear then it has some issues. Some of the time its due to sticky valves in the bodies which can usually be fixed with a good flush.

Hey there while we're on the topic of auto Mitsi boxes. I have this 92 Galant right, and when I'm driving and it shifts up it surges like 2grand higher before it shifts no matter how many RPM I'm doin, what's the deal with this?? Doesn't do it so much in overdrive though.

Sounds like its slipping. When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid or had the filter replaced? Do you know if the previous owner serviced it? Problem is with Mitsi automatic transmissions is they crap out early if not looked after - it's just the other manufacturors seem to be a bit more tolerant. Don't get me wrong, I will never buy another Mitsubishi automatic again after having to replace my transmission three times. Same goes with another pre 90s Toyota though, sick of patching up rust, rust and more rust.
