ECU advice.. Link, Motec, Apexi, Wolf where do i go?

Postby Adydas » Mon Jun 26, 2006 2:25 am

After many months pulling my hair out i end up back here.. But i need some advice and suggestions as well as options and feedback..

Ive got some great help coming my way and suggestions but i still want some help to find the most " usefull and cost effective way " of suiting my needs.

Gen 3 head, Gen 2 bottom end 3sgte.

ECU options?

Link G2
Wolf3D
Motec M400
Motec M800
Power FC
Autec ( belive typo there, Autronix? )
etc etc

Ive got a Gen3 SW20 Powerfc, but this requires custom work to make it work and even thats no garantee. I dont mind spending the money but i dont want to be spending 6 grand on a M800 if a 2100 Link G2 will do exactly what i need, Run my car...

But at the same time i dont want to be spending 2100 on a Link G2 if its naff and hard and costly to tune etc.

Anyone got any suggestions and feedback on good suitable ecu for my St185? Like the idea of removing the dizzy so Direct fire would be wicked.

i must say i've looked at wolf 3d and they lok quite good, give you a'f readout too, just have to get the wideband sensor, i think the biggest problem would be finding someone who can tune it in new zealand,

quite a good price too for the new one with hand controller

Isnt Wolf Dead? They havent released a new ECU in years and they have been bought out by another ECU company.

The first thing you need to do is list exactly what you want to do with your ECU. Then select an ECU that has that feature set. Forget nice to have lists as you will NEVER implement them. If its simply run your car then you could get away with a simple LEM and run it wasted spark. However its a very basic ECU and doesnt do things like AC idle up. IMO the very least you want to be looking at is the Link Plus. The G2 is a nice ECU with a good feature set.
Why do I mention Link, simply because its very well supported in NZ, which should be one of your biggest determining factors on selection.

If I was going all out race, and needed every single HP then the Motec M400 would be my pick.

Some of the guys in Australia has had majorly big success rates with their Wolf 3D ECUs. I'm pretty sure they are still being manufactured but I'll need to go check with the Auzy guys to find out exactly.

Part of the factor..

ECU'S
M4 ECU $2,407.50
M48 ECU $2,710.00
M400 ECU $3,852.00
M600 ECU $4,215.00
M800 ECU $4,815.00
M880 ECU $6,705.00

Link G2 $2100

Wolf3d still seem in production but as its simlar to pfc i dont belive its going to " Plug and play " for my needs.

I actually rang a dyno tuner and was suggested powerfc... "Great ecu, Easy to tune ", and as i have one.. its just a case of making it work..

Well i'm gona have to reccomend Autronic, as would Edgell Racing and Ralliart.
You can get a SMC for around $2100-$2500. Or if you can find one 2nd hand (sometimes Edgell has 2nd hand ones for sale) then it would cost you around $1500.
Drivability is magic with this ecu on my car, has 800cc injectors and quad throttles and just drives like a road car, u can even take off at 800rpm with out using any throttle.

I'd recommend a Motec, Autronic, Haltech probably e8/e11 instead of e6X which would work to, or a Link G2. I've never really had any problems with any of the above. I've never had problems with Microtech either but I don't think an Lt10 would be the way to go with regards to inputs/outputs & a few other features the others above have that microtech are still working on.

As above it really comes down to who's doing the install/tuning & what they are happy/competent doing as they'll more than likely get a better result for you if it's something that they know & tune regularly.

I'd stay away from a wolf from the experience's I've had, sure they work ok, but the backup/support was non-existant & the last one I fitted/tuned wouldn't work with the sensors on the car so I had to grind the majority of the sensor wheel away until it was one tooth/cylinder.

I'd check out HiTech Motorsport in Pukekohe if your looking at Microtech, being that they are one of the two official NZ dealers for Microtech & last time I checked where cheaper han elsewhere. They do Link, Autronic,Motec, haltech as well if that helps.

Why didn't your power-fc go??? I've do plenty of them & never had a problem. Was it to do with sensor/wiring differences between the engines??? Or was it just a configuration problem???
