TE71 Rear Brake Pads (Race)

Postby Dunny » Tue Jun 27, 2006 10:58 am

Can you guys tell me if there is an off the shelf pad suitable for race application for TE71 rear calipers? Possibly something like carbon metallic or the likes.

Thanks

The AE86 GTV and Apex used the same pad during '83 thru '87 so that could open a door for you in terms of listings. ;)

Great thanks, It was my understanding the AE86 caliper was different. Maybe the caliper is different but not the pad?

Caliper is different.

For your reference OEM part number on the rear pads is 04466-12100, both TE71 (e.g. Levin) and AE86 (GTV / APEX) models.

That's great thanks alot for that info.

Now - what sort of rear pads are you guys using as an upgrade from standard? I guess all sorts of options avail. being same pad as AE86. I have priced up some Mintex M1144 but seem to be quite expensive (around the $200 mark).

This is dedicated track car.

Cheers

Ferodo DS3000 is a good compaund but if you think M1144 is to much money then DS3000 will be out.

I would be running either Ferodo DS3000 or Mintex M1166 personally.

Me personally, I am not privileged enough to own an AE86 let alone TE71 Levin.

Since you using the car solely as a track car the Mintex pads would definitely be the choice if I were doing it.

However every driver is different and whilst some might prefer a sprint compound like the M1144, others could prefer something like a Ferrodo DS2000.

It might pay to get on the blower to Steve at Racebrakes and discuss your needs.

I assume however you may have already spoken to him given you've already had the price back you've quoted here sounds about right.

$200 is cheap when looking at race compounds.

The Mintex compounds Racebrakes do perform superbly when run with the right fluid on a conventional brake system.

What's even better is you don't get an off-the-shelf set. The guys there bond the compound material onto your old backing plates. Think of it as a custom job.

Anyway enough from me ...

Happy racing!

Couldn't agree more!

We use M1166 and have never looked back on our cars. :)

Thanks again guys

I did speak to Steve to price up some pads.

I ran M1166 on the front of the car for awhile and personally didn't like them, although they may not have been performing to there potential due to extreme rotor temps.

It's short races only 4-8 laps, so a reasonably aggressive pad would be the go. I guess the only trade off with that is pad life.

What dimensions were the front rotors?

What sort of condition were the rotors in?

Seems bizaare to get that happening on a light car if all was well in the braking department.

Car was well out performing the brake set up, KP61 factory boosted brake set up, with fluid, pads and rear shoes upgraded.

I'm looking to upgrade from drums to disc on rear, larger front rotors with 4pot calipers.

I have TE71 calipers I was going to utilise on the rear but just trying to sort out if there was a suitable pad, as opposed to having to have one cut out.
