AE86 diff gear into AE85 housing?

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Mon Jun 26, 2006 8:33 pm

Just wondering if I was to get all the internal gear out of an ae86 diff (LSD diff head, axles etc), and modified the ae85 diff housing so the '86 head will fit, would everything fit in?

or are axles different widths, lengths etc?

im guessing if it is just the axle width which is different, there would be particular seals which could be fitted to take up the difference in space.

and the diff head size, i know the AE86 diff heads are bigger than '85s, but in what way? how are diff heads measured? width ways or from the back of it to the front of the flange?

this may be entirely impossible, but wondering if it could be done with a bit of work.

why would you not use the AE86 housing as well???

the mounting hole for the diff head would be too small on the 85 diff.

Axles between T and S series are supposedly the same. Don't know if in zenki or kouki but assume whichever is the earlier one (zenki I think). However centres are not, S is 8 bolt and T is 10 bolt and any attempts to interchange would be costly and probably pointless.

that is not an issue.

wde_bdy wrote:and probably pointless.

why is this? because changing the studs alone still wont let it fit? (as in the inner part of the diff head/housing would need to be made larger to allow the bigger 86 diff head too)

sorry if this is answered in the link you gave, haven't read through it all yet. will go through it tomorrow.

Costly and pointless because unlikely to fit no matter what you do and you can get a suitable T series housing for pretty cheap.

yep like he said, difficult and pointless, just pull a t series housing out of a corona, has bigger brakes than an ae85 anyway and has the same head as an ae86

No ... why not try fit a hilux head in to that housing ?
Anyway .. its a waste of time ... i wouldnt even convert to T series unless it was with facelift axles ... but even then i would still be 50/50 on it

depending on what is getting done, some things dont cost me money...all I have to pay for is parts, and seeing as I already have an ae85 diff housing all setup for a ke35 I was just curious if it might be easier to buy just an 86 head + axles and fit that to my current diff housing with a bit of grinding and welding.

seeing as that is not the case, I might just stick to my sh!tty ae85 diff head which spins one wheel everywhere for now...

already have that sitting in my garage, and its non-lsd and overkill for my little 88kw of bluetop grunt

what would be the minimum kw you'd want to warrant putting something like that in? could pick up an LSD for one of them for around $400, so have an LSD diff setup for a ke35 for well under $1000 (all up).
probably looking at about the same or more for an ae86 lsd rear end, atleast the hilux diff will never blowup...

Ignore what horsepower would justify it and think $$$ value for the results. The only downside is the weight, and unless you are talking serious race car you won't ever notice.

what sort of weight difference is there between an ae85/6 diff and a hilux one then? the car is noticably slower with just 1 extra person in it so Im wondering how much different the hilux diff would actually make.

there are a few hilux LSD's around for less than $300, so this could actually be worth it. especially seeing as I am looking at turboing my car in the future...

heh.
i ran hilux diff with stock 4age, and now with modified na 4age.
You're talking about 10kg or so in weight and more drivetrain inertia.

S and T axles are different.

i would do it again with a bluetop or 5k just so i don't have to muck about with tiny stupid T series gear.

why don't you guys just do stuff.

because it would be far too easy to follow a tried and tested method

for sure, i don't put much HP to the ground. but it still amazes me that a standard T-50 and T-series rear can take the punishment, although the 4.1:1 ratios do get noisy very quickly

Im with Karl, I chucked a Hilux LSD behind a stock 4AGE and love it, I regret not doing it when I was running a 5K.

hah I wish it would be that easy. I was always under the impression that a hilux diff would be way to heavy for a standard 4age, obviously not the case though.

are all hilux axles the same then? as in it doesn't matter what diff head I get, it will fit the axles on the diff I have at the moment? thats what I've heard at some point before, so just wanting to make sure before I go buying an lsd diff head that doesn't fit!
