im changing my cv's [ae92 sedan]

Postby [intrcool] » Wed Jun 28, 2006 1:17 pm

im changing my cv joints because they have started to click a lot (durr)

anyways, ive managed to pull the entire drive shaft out (not what i had planned for but hey...)

now, ive been told to bend the CV as far as it will go and then whack it hard with a heavy hammer to pop it off... i have been doing this most of yesterday afternoon, and all of this morning and haven't acheived jack shit.

can someone please explain what the hell needs to be done to get the CV off... i had asked Toyota down here in rotorua to do it but was gna cost $500 (200 parts, 300 labour) but have a mate who can get me cv's at $60 ea.

so yea.. any helpers???

cheers

if sledge hummer fails, grinder is an option (be very careful not to damage shaft itself)... I had problem with some starlet CVs not coming off drive shaft, so I grinded (with cut off disc) along the CV joint in such way that it would weaken the outer part, and cut through the ball cage, than with the persuation (hummer) the shell, cage and ball fall off, left with inner sprocket, did couple of cuts (grinder) to weaken it (in the thin part), so eventually it fell apart..

Be careful though, the last time I saw that done, it turned into a very long and messy job involving large amounts of swearing and hammering.

or you could just buy the genuine part and do it in 1/2 hour with no hammer or swearing......

genuine outer c/vs come complete with the shaft.
all you do is pull the shaft and tri bearing out of the inner c/v. remove the circlip that holds the bearings on and take them off. throw away the old outer and shaft and replace with the new one
they even come with grease 8)

I keep the cv straight when I do it. Shaft in vice and afew solid direct hits. Never had a big issue that way in the past, quick and easy. Did afew a coupple of days ago.

as said, the genuine's a good go if you have not bought new ones already.

correct. Clip is for the inner joint.

Much less hassle follwing the suggestion of the man above and clicking on the sig.
