What are your thoughts on this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=61422689
I realise its small and gutless but it would be pretty reliable vehicle yeah? It looks tidy as well.

or if anyone has a good car they could sell me for less than $200? I know it sounds like I'm being a cheapskate but I'm just wanting a daily driver.

Depends how much they want for it. Would be a brilliant little hack though.

Hell, the asking price is $0 ono! Can't go wrong with that!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Meeeeeeeeeean. Stick some fender mirrors on it, drop it on black painted standard steelies with some of those chrome trim rings and you're set.

Pity it's not a 2dr one, they had the kick-ass porthole windows in the rear quarters.

Depends on the price really ... you're buying a bit of an orphan in the sense that there weren't many sold here, and they're very old. I've had a Daihatsu Mira (1989?) and it was cheap to run, but absolutely *awful* to drive. Loud, bouncy, diabolical handling, non existant brakes.

Whereas if you buy something more run of the mill, then you get a much better car for your money. The g/f has had two EE90 Corolla's ($500 for one, $750 for the other). They're as common as muck, really easy to get any parts for, run on the smell of an oily rag, and they're a good car for getting from A to B in. We took one up to Taupo and back, got 15km per litre and got up to a speed that really surprised me on the desert road (say no more ). Plus, it's easy to get wheels and tires to suit, and even springs and shocks if you want to get it handling a bit nicer.

My old Mira highway use would get 20 km/l, the EE90's are getting 15 km/l highway, so the trade off isn't huge. That said, my AE111 4AFE Corolla stationwagon, and Charade DeTomaso also get 15km/l. So you're sacrificing a WHOLE lot of comfort and usability for getting that extra 5km/l.

But, all that said, the old Daihatsu would be a hard case little hackabout. I'd actually like to get a Mira stationwagon, circa about 1990. Because it's just such a funny looking thing. My Mira was actually astonishingly roomy inside, with (no kidding around) plenty of room for four people just beacuse it was so tall.

For a grand that's a good score provided it's got no mechanical issues.

I rate the Daihatsus. Use feck all gas (well, I drive mine pretty hard, I mean, I PUNISH it, has been nothing other than super reliable the whole time I've had it), with independant rear, fuel tank mounted in front of the rear wheels, and weighing 700kg.. probably the best factory-handling car I've ever owned, just goes round corners on rails!

And it only cost me $300, off an asian guy who had bought another car, because it needed another wof. Which it flew through!

Had two of those Charades........

One was that facelift model and the other was the earlier prefacelift. G10 Model.

Damn reliable things, cant kill them. Happily revved mine out to like 6500 everytime and it never quit.

Even put it through a mud puddle which was like bumper deep. Damn thing still kept going

I had a Daihatsu for 2 years, and drove it from Auckland to Hamilton and Back everyday for 18months with absolutely no mechanical problems at all (about 120K in total)... I really do think they're very under-rated cars...
