Cheap but Decent Alarms?

Hi,

As many will know, i just bought a 1997 Curren.

I want to put an alarm on it.....but unsure of what to go for??

Ive not got much of a budget, really wanting the cheapest, decent alarm around.

Anyone got any ideas?

cheap and decent do usually go together lol

but a uniden from repco maybe ur best bet??

unless you're going to go all out and spend lots of $$$ to get a really good alarm system installed, I would say just get something that makes alot of noise when bumped/tampered with, and has a good immobilser on it and a good idea would be one with a backup power supply too.

in the end an alarm won't stop someone stealing a car, it will only deter them. otherwise you can install allsorts of switches all over the place which all need to be turned the right way for everything to work. i've got 3 types of immobilsers/kill switches on my car and i'm still putting more on. quite easy to setup if you have a bit of electrical knowledge, and pretty much costs a $5 switch from repco and thats it.

hardest part is hunting around and finding easy accessible but hidden places to put the switches!

Jaycar sell an alarm with everything you would want, imobiliser, siren, auto arm, etc, etc in fact ill just copy and paste

Also, some of those cheaper alarms arent NZIS approved, so while they might put off some thieves from nicking your car/stereo, you wont get discounted premiums.
Mongoose M80G is a good alarm, retails at about $380. Dynatron etc also have a very good rep, but they are a bit more.
IMO its not worth skimping on alarms unless you're not really fussed about your car or its contents going walkies.

I think depends what it is you're really after. There are some fairly good options on trademe. If you can install it yourself then it doesn't cost that much.

I recently installed a mongoose 4 star alarm for a mate. It's got dual immobiliser, boot sensor, 2 stage shock sensor and it was only approx $120 off trademe. Of coz installing it yourself doesn't get you any brownie points with the insurance company but if you need to then you could just take it to an alarm shop and they can install it for maybe $150?? So all up that's a 4 star alarm installed by a pro for less than $300!!

I agree with getting a mongoose, had one in my last car, and now they sell them at the warehouse (incl installation) and they're even cheaper.

My one had:

Dual Immobilser
Built-in battery backup siren
Eleventy Billion combinations
Silent arm/disarm options
Modular design (could add extra features at a later date)
Warning chirps (let's tire kickers know it's alarmed without going off)
Valet mode
5 star rating (if prof. installed) - this can help with insurance

Best of all it wasn't one of those obnoxious, annoying cheapies that goes off every time a rotary goes past and people quickly learn to ignore.
