Removing the rear seats....

So I got a mini clubman which is my daily driver at the moment (whilst the staz gets fixed) and is being slowly turned into a race car.
I stripped the rear half of the interior ie. seats, carpet, side linings etc....
When I went for my warrent the guy said that it failed for having no rear seat, i said thats fine and i'll go put it back in there for the warrent. He also suggested going and getting it changed from a 5 seater to a 2 seater. So i rang the LTSA and they said that all you got to do is go down to the AA office, show them the car has no rear seats and they'll change it on the computer. I go down to AA and talk to the lady who then rings the technical people who told me I have to have a low volume cert to take out the rear seats perminatly!!! and they wouldn't do it. Now going that the LTSA make the rules are they correct??? Has anyone here done it?? or work for the AA (hint hint )

I've taken the rear seats, carpets, door trims, belts etc out of the back of my starlet (carpet in front too) and just flew through a warrant yesterday no problems and never has been. Have not changed anything with AA etc.

Where did you go to get the warrant

i think if you no rear seats, then you have to take the belts out? or were they still in there

you can remove rear seats out as long as you remove the belts, I've been talking about that with a VINZ guy, which rang LTSA to confirm.

All you need to get a warrent is a drivers seat.


That's all the standards mention.

Can't see why you would have to remove the seatbelts etc.

No rear seat belt nothing from the front seats back....
The guy said that it was still registered as a 5 seater
It was at on-the-go at eastgate in chch.
I recommend staying away from there aye, when i was there something like 6 cars went before me and they all failed on something, and a couple people came back to get there cars after shopping in the mall and they had all failed......

I rang LTNZ or is it VTNZ? ages ago when I did this to the Supra. They said that it's fine to take your rear seats out as long as you remove the seatbelts aswell.

Went through warrant no problems.

Going to another place on sat where my bro got a warrent with no rear brake lights and a brake cylinder leaking so bad you have to pump the pedal 3 times to get anything...... Admittedly there's nothing wrond with my clubman though

I had the same issue with my car. Nothing behind the front seats and I got failed. The people at the VINZ station went as far to tell me I would need to have interior panelling even after I got the car changed to a 2 seater... Then there was lots of bollocks about needing it certed to change the registration to a 2 seater...

At the end of the day it was all bollocks. I don't know where it says it, but I was told (by a much more trust worth source, but not the LTSA), if the back seat was removed then the belts needed to be taken out too.

And in saying all of this. I got the car certed due to other mods anyway and just changed it officially to a two seater... Solve you issue. Get a half cage, then a cert and tell them where to sit.

Well the car is going to be a fully spec race car thats going to be road registered for me to drive round in, so going to get full cage anyway.... but what i want to do is do everything to it first so it's tricked out and then go get a cert for everything at once.......

You only need to weld the seatbelt mounting bolt holes up for certification as a 2 seater. I looked at doing this a few years back, but couldn't be arsed forking out $350 for cert when I couldn't really justify it.

There are plenty of modded-car friendly places in Chch man, I go to one in particular for all of my cars, they're good, but quite busy. You have PM!
