Tech help on repairs needed!!

Postby J1 » Wed Jul 05, 2006 11:57 am

Hey,

I drive a Carina ED-G Limited - I think the body is an ST202 and engine is the 3SGE. I was having some steering issues so took it into John Bates Autos in Palmy who advised me that both front suspension arms need urgently replacing at a cost of $340 + GST (superstrutt) each but they will send to AKL for reconditioning at $250 each. Also both front CV joints need replacing (yep - been putting these off for a while now) at $145 +GST each. All up I'm looking at $1200 including labour to get this car running safely and well again.

My questions are, is this reasonable?, do I have any other options?, are these repairs DIYable?, is it worth spending the $$ to fix the car properly? and any other advice. The car has done 180k, have spent nothing on it except regular oil changes in last 7 years, fantastic motor. If had to get rid of would only upgrade to something like GT-T or Altezza but wife won't let me :)

Thanks,
Lyndon

I have dealt with John Bates in palmy before.
I don't think I would ever go there again.

Buy Toyota genuine parts for your suspension - cheaper, better, last longer.
The labout cost sounds like they want to charge you for the whole time that the car is there including overnight @ $xxx per hour!
I'm out of touch with the palmy mechanics but when I lived there I dealt with "Brake and Clutch" or similar name on Tremaine Ave almost opposite Placemakers. If it's the same owner as about 7 years ago they will look after you.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

well, it seems the parts I need are going to be expensive :? Can't win them all. It's going to cost $900 to replace both suspension arms now (parts only) and Mr. Revhead is by far the best option for these parts, (thanks). I think I'll take the advice of not repairing the worn parts and replace instead, even at an extra $600. Thanks for the help
