I need power fast!

Postby quicklvn » Tue Jul 11, 2006 5:44 pm

Ok guys I've just bought a AE101 with 20V silver top and i'm off to the drag strip in a couple of weeks to test it out at the winter drags.

the car has a 2 1/4" exhaust right through and a HKS pod filter, it goes pretty hard but I would like to get a bit more power out of it before I take it down the strip.

Are there any fast (and cheap) ways to get a bit more power to lower the time a bit?

Cheers guys :D

Strip it out, get rid of sounds especially subs and shit, spare tyres, rear seats. Run standard wheels all round, but with good rubber on the front. Other than that, run 98 maybe a wee bit of octane booster.

Anything more than that will cost $$$ and is more than likely to be ready 100% in a couple of weeks.

Oh and learn to drive it, back country roads, practice your launch and optimal shift points.

What about NGK Iridium plugs and 8mm leads etc? it only has crap plugs and 5mm leads atm. Im also gonna give it an oil change and give the injectors a clean out. would this kind of stuff help?

Might make an extra 2hp, 5 if the old ones are screwed.
Nitrous is your best bet for extra power cheaply.

imo stripping out an ae101 is not worth the effort for the SLIGHT gains to be had, interior doesnt weight THAT much, you would look pretty hardcore tho if ya did, thats about it :P

best bet is to get the best tyres you can on the front, eagle F1s would be good, and just see how ya go, you're not gunna get 10s so just have fun 8)

To Escortman.
At the drags the generally have a quick look under the bonnet and check the battery is attached securely and sometimes check the radiator overfill bottle is ok. They check you have a certified helmet and if your brake pedal is firm. They look at your tyres too sometimes.
You'll be sweet as without the cert. They even let me through without a current WOF in my BZ-G once, it had been expried for a month or so  oops.

With the winter drags, from memory it's all DYO, so it's all about consistency, not outright power and speed. Just learn how to read the light tree well and get your reaction time down nice and low and run super consistent. That's how I beat a 12 second EVO in my BZ-G a while back.

The black and silver top have really crappy torque. You best chance at going faster is to rip out everything not welded down and to learn how to launch. I would expect you will get a mid 16 maybe even a 17. Pretty slow cars.

My AE111 BZ-G did 15.7, but I ended up winning cause I was doing it consistently.

I didn't have a cold air feed and didn't strip it out at all though. Take your headlight out and get a good cold air feed and go as nuts as you can be bothered with stripping it out. Then you might be looking at low 15s, high 14s. Bearing in mind you'll have to put all the $hit back in again once your done.

I haven't seen too many mildly worked 20Vs get into the 14s. I had an EE80 Sedan with a silvertop conversion, that was quite quick, but nothing to write home to Mum about.
