How to tell difference between 4k and 4k-u

Postby ollieboy » Sun Jul 16, 2006 6:29 pm

I have two 4k's. One is in my car and the other one makes a nice door stop. They are both running. The one in my car is a 4k but I'm trying to figure out whether or not the other one is a 4k-u which is the japanese model I believe? and I think it has higher compression head? Correct me if I'm wrong.

How can I tell if it is definately a 4k-u or not? It has japanese stickers on which leads me to believe it is a 4k-u.

Take the head off and look at the pistons. 4K-U's are dished with a flat head. Its only 8 bolts ;)

They have a little bit more torque than a standard 4K, but not so much more that its worth the half hour to swap engines
Swap the heads, then you'll have some fun ;)

dont actually do this, unless you want 15:1 compression or 7:1

I had a 4K-J out of a KP61, those things are nuts! Totally standard, was much faster than any other 4K I've ever driven, although the only thing I could see different was the emissions gear?

4K-U also came in 2 versions as I understand, the "twin squish" heron head type combustion chamber, and a regular type.

The twin squish I believe is the later type, reputedly the gruntiest 4K with a whopping 74 Toyota-hp.
