18RG can give good power & torque but is heavy and not well regarded by tuners.
2TG is much lighter and is commonly used with the lighter T50 which, as it happens, TRD still do close ratio kits for.

The car was being billed as a cruiser which the 150-165HP of a well tuned mild 18R-G (145HP Stock with 131lb ft for the early 9.7:1 CR engine) would propel quite nicly.

I have driven a well tuned 18R-GEU that made 160HP at the wheels in a Carina GT and that was a NICE drive.

The W5x series of boxes will bolt up to a 18R-G and they are a better box than the T50 IMHO.

The 18R-G has a bad rep for some reason that I cannot fathom, I have had one apart and they are reasonably strong with a good hemi head design, large valve area and VERY good torque for an oversquare engine being 8 valve.

It would suit the period of the car well as well IMHO with a very similar look to the 2TG.

Other people have different ideas to mine, but then I am one of the minority that thinks that the Crossflow Kent is a better engine for the Escort than the boat anchor that is the 2L OHC Pinto as well.

Just my $0.05 (Inflation and all that) :D
