NZ GTi AE92. Is it worth $4000?

Postby yobbosayo » Sat Jul 15, 2006 11:09 pm

It's that one on trademe. Early days for the vendor I suppose, but he sure wasn't keen to move from 4k. I was going to buy it, but everyone I talked to said I was mad.
1990, 155000k's, smallport 4age, alarm, stereo, unmodified, towbar, 4 good tyres, recent cambelt change

Only concern was the aftermarket sunroof that was causing rust in the roof (of course)

any premium for NZ new? I couldn't see anything that was different from the fxgt models

what do you guys reckon?

If they're a dealer, then yea, I suppose thats ok, but for a private trade, NAH.

Both my MR2's are NZ new. I bought my 90 SW a couple of years back for about $500 more than that. AND it had less K's and no rust.

I think you're probably getting taken for a ride.

Your best option is to look around. The only difference you're going to get is a 240 or 260 kph speedo over a 180 one.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

That is a high price unless it's totally mint, and from your description that it has rust in the roof ... well, I'd pass on that one unless the price shifts accordingly. They're a good car, but you can do better for that amount of money.

I paid 5000 for mine about 4 years ago but it was mint, 120kms and completely orginal except for the alarm, barely a scratch on it. Still haven't seen one like it and I'm still realy f**king angry it got written off and its been like a year since it happened.

i wouldn't buy this one for 4g. Especially by the sounds of that sunroof. I probably wouldn't buy one identical to my old one for 5g either but that was 4 years ago, I was 18 and once i drove it there was no changing my mind.

i got absolutely raped being under 25. State wouldn't touch it for the first 2 years i owned it. Went with National auto club, being pretty much the only option and eventually got 3rd party fire/theft with state but full was a joke.

6. The amount at which something is valued above its par or nominal value, as money or securities.
9. An unusual or high value: Employers put a premium on honesty and hard work.

at a premium

1. More valuable than usual, as from scarcity: Fresh water was at a premium after the reservoir was contaminated.

I believe you'll find that that is the context he used the word premium in ;)
When in doubt, down and out.

Probably not worth 4k, but someone might pay close to it. There's a real following with these cars amongst an older generation of drivers who lusted after them when they were new in NZ.

There are a few differences from FXGT, most obvious is the speedo and lack of restrictors. There are other changes such as different grille and bonnet, no catalytic convertor, no power steering (it was an option), no AC (also an option), no oxygen sensor, lack of TEMS suspension, trim differences (centre console, gearknob) etc etc.

Kerb weight is 1015kg, lighter than the FXGT I think?

Not too many were sold in NZ, they were too expensive.
