MTA Warranty - Have you claimed b4?

Postby WanaGo » Tue Jul 18, 2006 8:23 pm

MTA Warranty - 5000km or 100 days (whichever is first)

Has anyone claimed on one of these warranties from a car dealer before. How successful were you, and what sort of bill did the car company have to pay?
Do you have to involve the MTA to achieve this?

Thanks

What reason were you going to make a claim for.
The first thing i would do would be to phone the MTA and ask them.

Yeah.
The repairs I just got done on my car cos about $1500 all up. I contacted the car yard before I took the car to Toyota for repairs, they said take it in and call back when you hear details of what is wrong etc.
I did that, and car yard offered to pay for the water pump and half the labour. I had to pay for new cam belt etc. Toyota then found the radiator tank to be cracked, so that was further money - car yard said they would pay half again.
I read the MTA warranty policy on the MTA site, and it says nothing about paying halves etc. I asked the car yard about this, but I just got a carsalesman pitch.
I have contacted MTA with the details, and they are going to get back to me, I only emailed them as it was after hours.
The car is within the 5000km/100day etc still, and according to all the details in the policy, I am fully covered.

Now should I be pursuing this to get the car yard to pay for the whole bill (of which I have already paid half as I needed the car back asap), or will I not get anywhere.

I wasnt happy with what the car yard said about half, but from what they told me, the MTA warranty was more of a 'good will' warranty and wasnt like an insurance claim sort of thing.

Have I been screwed, or do I still have a leg to stand on?

cheers

Bottom line, the MTA warranty will be only as good as any paperwork you have. If the policy (or whatever you have) says it covers all costs then it has to cover all costs. If they try to palm you off with less the threat of Fair Go etc may sort them out.

Yeah true.

The dealer is a MTA dealer, so all vehicles they sell have this MTA warranty as a minimum.

The Toyota I took the car to, to get fixed was an MTA repairer. However, the service manager I talked to said he has never had to deal with a MTA warranty before - which didnt help things.

Yep - that is the policy I was refering to.

The MTA Dealer Warranty means that the MTA Dealer will ensure that any defects that
arise in a qualifying motor vehicle during the period that the Warranty is valid are repaired
(subject to the exclusions set out below). This may involve the MTA Dealer covering the
reasonable cost of parts and labour to repair any defects or may involve the MTA Dealer
paying the excess on any applicable mechanical warranty.

Now I read that as being if I am within the policy, which I seem to be (under 100 days, and done less than 5000km, private vehicle etc etc), then they should cover the costs of the repair - no questions.

Concensis?

The MTA Dealer Warranty does not apply to audio and navigation systems, consumables
(fluids, batteries, tyres, brake pads), shock absorbers, corrosion, paintwork and items
replaced during servicing.

This is what they did, as per the Toyota Invoice:

Removed window washer bottle and overflow bottle, removed alternator bracket and wiring. Removed engine mount and right front wheel. Removed engine cover, crank pulley, timing covers, strut bracket, air con unit bracket, dip stick tube, thermostat. Replaced waterpump and idler bearing. Replaced cambelt and tensioner, reassembled.
Removed radiator and fans and sent to 'sublet company'.
Refitted radiator and fan wiring and filled with cooland. Bled up system and checked for leaks, all ok.

Total $1431.45, I paid $778.01 - Balance for car dealer ($653.44).

Comments please.

part of the reason of buying from a dealer is to get cover, which is why the MTA exists I guess...

make them pay the lot, if they refuse, as said, threaten fair go.

I learnt the hard way thats not allways true if a car is UNDER and im going by memory 11 years of age Legally the car yard is paying for anything soley on good will, i ended up rining and confirming with some company in charge of car yards. How ever i belive this car is not over 11 years like mine was so isnt an issue but just a beware for anyone reading this its NOT allways a given that you get cover.

I learnt the hard way that i would have been better to purchase privatly, car yard paid for squat and diidnt have to. Wasnt all bad news in the end i crashed there loan car into a brand new press car 2002/3 Skoa Superb.

Perhaps if i wasnt under the stress of all these costs from them screwing me my driving would have been better that day :P...

If the cambelt and tensioner were only replaced because they were in there the dealer shouldn't have to pay.

What was the problem? Faulty radiator or water pump?

Water pump seized, and radiator was found to have a crack in the plastic tank (whole top of GTT radiator is plastic), where the top hose leads off. Mine is now Alloy though :)

They said they replaced the cam belt etc as it may have been stressed etc when the pump seized, as the water pump runs off that apparently.

My cam belt was already changed about 2 or 3000km before I brought it, so it wasnt due by any means, but the seized pump may have damaged it - they didnt want to risk it.

Car has done 95000km. There is a MTA warranty for cars over 100,000km or over 10 years old, which is only 3000km/30days. This isnt the case for mine.

That is correct, and I wouldn't consider it a complete/proper repair if the cambelt wasn't replaced after the waterpump having siezed. It's definitely not a case of 'we had it off so may as well replace it'.

In my opinion you're being shafted, and I'd be kicking up a fuss.

is MTA warranty different to Mechanical Warranty?

anyway, reading the pdf looks like you should be fully covered, if in doubt call MTA call centre

sometimes there are parts that arent covered by warranty

Yeah mate - Ive sent through all my details to a MTA lady, who has emailed back - but she was passing on to the appropriate area.

Mechanical Warranty is generally the warranty you buy from an insurance company, rather than what comes free with your car.
MTA warranties are given to all cars sold under a MTA dealership - they have to have a MTA warranty, thats what makes them MTA approved.

I did.
They said - Half.
I said - whats this half business.
They said - blah blah blah Half.

Got the impression it was going to be half or nothing.
Took the half - as I needed the car.

Found out I could/should have got full (minus fluids etc) - and here we are.

I will keep you posted as to what the MTA comes back with.

Cheers
