exhaust noise finale

Well.
I'm all for this now that it would appear they've dealt with "how to prove you passed already". I like the tag idea.
As always there will be ways around this (flanged in extra silencers for WOF).
As for silencers, I would think that the test should require that the exhaust be in it's most noisy setting. But this would create some pretty hideous logistical nightmares. Personally, if I went in for a test and had removable silencers or some way of reducing noise, I'd just set it to max noise and make sure it passes that way.

I am glad this is finally being sorted!

I am annoyed at One news last night. Somehow (once again) they managed to find a person who wasn't representative of the majority of car enthusiasts to "interview" on TV!

Oh well.

That's life I guess...

That annoyed me too. No wonder the general public think were all a bunch of tossers...

This is what I got from a paper article

There are two ways that you can be sent away for an exhaust noise emissions tes
1st by the police planting that lovely green sticker on the front of our windows
2nd is an entry compliance certifer who can request you get you get tested pior to your imported car receiving its wof

Also
Allow 30 – 60 minutes for a complete under body vehicle inspection to measure and record the details of your exhaust system and check that it complies with the standards set out = followed by the on ground noise emission test itself
To ensure that the testing is as accurate as possible the testing procedures as set out in the standard and comprehensive, and all certifiers are being traind in both the requirements and useof the testing equipment, if the car passes that’s followed by another 15 mins of paper work b4 you can drive away this can and will cost you anything between $115 and $175 “ and if your in a outer region town you will have to do some travelling to the nerest test center which will sting u ferther “

The current legislation is 81dB prior to july 19 2006 it is increasing to 95dB ( plus or minus factoring ) 120-140dB is deemed to be the pain threshold, as one fixed rating carries no allowance for varying engine sizes vehicle age engine noise frequencies etc, its even still low at 95dB
As for an example a 1 yr old commodore with a factory exhaust system “ tested at factory specs “ is 95.5dB and a ba xr6 turbo is like 105dB or close to it

Also 95dB seems like a worthwhile increase over the old 91dB but that’s not the case, 91dB was a drive by test whereas the new 95dB is a static test, at 75 % of engine speed/maximum power es/mp ( where in the rev range an engine makes max pwa ) you can generally add 15 dB to a drive by figure to get the equivalent static reading so 81 plus 15 is 96dB and status quo

And to top the whole thing off ltnz has only got 10 meters ( 9 certifers will have one each ) and the other will float around the country

I personally have issues with this
How can they justifie the dB limit at 95? Whn most factory tested exhaust systems exeed this limit ie ford and holden it b.s man

Also will the be doing motorbikes aswell? Like Harleys and trimphs? Again prob not so its total b s

I am in the process of making my own jig at work “ as we have a noise tester here for our lamborgihini tractors “ so whn I have finished making it anyone in hamliton feel free to pm me so we can test away

how am i meant to be able to tell if the exhaust system i intend to fit will pass or not?
i dont want to shell out bout $500 for my exhaust system and find that its illegal.
does anyone know of the best mufflers to keep noise down but still increase preformance?

You know those big shiny bling cannons people have? They're not one of them...technically, they're more of a resonator than a muffler.
There are plenty of well made mufflers available that flow really well as well as keep noise down.

You then swallow hard and buy a Japanese made system. However most people here don't wanna pay $1000 for an exhaust system when they can get the local muffler shop to make one up for $300.

You simply say to your exhaust man -
" give me a legal exhaust system"
Since there is now a set standard you can rely on their expertise to ensure your system is legal. If it turns out not to meet the test, they are liable for costs and repairs to make it legal.

The decibel reading at Ruapuna is also taken on a straight while the cars are under full acceleration. This test for road cars is taken at constant throttle (which will help you keep under the limit  )

IMHO, this law sounds fair as there's no need for ANY street car to have a louder exhaust than a race car. NO excuses.

You make it sound like you're allowed to be as loud as a racecar. Bit of a difference between half a meter and the side of a track, or boundary of the track property..

Also, I wouldn't bring the whole 'need' thing into this either. There's no NEED to have a car capable of a 200kmph top speed either.

Whatever the case, I guess it's quite clear who they're targetting (which is good), but also clear this will be another weapon in the polices' revenue gathering arsenal.

I also don't agree with factory exhaust systems being exempt. If there's a limit it should be across the board. I see no reason why you should be allowed a louder car just because mr holden decided they didn't want to muffle it further from the factory.

as fair as i no each factory ( and or country or origan ) has its own exhaust dB limits
i put the whole holden ford thing in to the mix because of how it can effect other pple not just " boy racers " in a hole its going to effect every1 who modifys cars

and it also points out that 95dB is to low for a stationary vechilce

put it this way i can have a 150hp Lamborghini tractor " brand new " drve down the rd at 40km doing a drive buy and have the dB reading at ruff as 96 maybe pushing 100
at idol 90 and on the P.T.O dyno you really dont want to know what it reads
maybe that wasnt a good example

its good in respects " lol i no i have one loud arse car lol and one vip cruzer thats quiet " because it keeps dick heads off the rev limiter "fingers crossed " and im not just singailng out honda drivers as mush as i hate to say it a majority or 20v owners are the same and do the same

I dont have a problem with bringing in a law but more against the fact that people are so bitchy moany these days.

I mean shit i couldnt care less if you have a loudish exhaust during the day but it should mainly be enforced at night when noise levels actually are a concern due to obvious reasons.

The entire point of this isn't to set all exhaust as 95dB. Its to remove the people who drive around with noisy exhausts at 3am sitting at 7 grand in a residential area or just generally being a pain in the ass.

It is extremely likely that the older guys in the Clubsports and Falcons with the over-95dB exhausts will not get picked on and who cares? How often are you upset by one fo those driving by? And how completely annoying is it when a noisy as hell Honda or Toyota goes screaming past when you know for a fact that the exhaust is there all for show. You can drive a car quietly and if you have one with a bit of an exhaust and drive it nicely then chances are you're not going to be given sh*te about it.

The rules are there to get rid of the people making it an issue, all power to the cops

I would like to see this law spread out to include motorbikes aswell.. why should they be exempt? They are just another road user, and cause just as much disturbance as any other with a noisy exhaust system.

It does include motorbikes, but seeing this is a car forum I neglected to include that information.

Motorbikes:
6000rpm if the engine is a 2 stroke single-cylinder engine
5000rpm 2 stroke multi cylinder
3000rpm 4 stroke single cylinder
2500rpm 4 stroke multi cylinder 2 valve per cylinder
4000rpm 4 stroke multi cylinder 3 or more valve
4500rpm 4 stroke 3 or more cylinders

im not too fussed ,most of my noise is wastegate related anyway , and is only loud under full load. when my car got impounded (illegaly) the officer even wrote in his statement that it was quiet at idle and low revs.
if i get pinged ill just follow the rules and plumb it back in.

if it helps get rid of the homos who drive round making a racket for the sake of it , ie POS pimped out  vans with 50$ exhausts ,fartcan 1980's hondas with no springs and primered up series 1 rx7's then im all for it.
