Leaking shock... What are my options?

Postby RomanV » Thu Jul 20, 2006 12:08 pm

I failed a WOF, because one of my shocks is leaking.

Since it's a 5 way adjustable one (Of unknown brand) I'd rather keep it than replace it.

Is getting a shock rebuilt feasible?
Or is replacing it the only option?

Obviously if I replace the RHS shock I should replace the LHS one too.

However if I get the RHS shock rebuilt, will it be necessary to get the LHS one rebuilt too? Or will it be fine?

Or is getting shocks rebuilt prohibitively expensive?
If not, who do you reccomend for getting shocks rebuilt in the AKL region?

Thanks
Roman

Getting shocks rebuild is usually around the price of getting a new shock anyway.

It's best to do suspension items in pairs, if the RHS is leaking now, chances are te LHS will be on its way out too.

Go to some suspension shops and get quotes for rebuilt shocks, and try repco/supercheap for quotes for new shocks

If it's 5 way adjustable it's most probably a Tokico shock, in which case just buy a new one as I don't think they're rebuildable.

You should probably replace both of them unles the failure was not from old age, as chances are the other one will fail soon, and it may not have the same level of damping as a new one.

Other option is to fit a new insert (assuming the shock body is designed for a removable damper assembly). In that case you'd have to replace both dampers. There are a few options for this ranging from reasonably cheap to very expensive (though I'm not sure what they charge for Koni inserts these days)

Take it to Stocks in Te Apunga Place Mt Wellington. They should be able to sort it one way or the other for you.

Okay thanks for the advice, I will probably get some new shocks instead of rebuilding.

If you want to be able to rebuild and revalve shocks in the future, consider Bilstein.

Usually a good price if you import inserts from USA. The last set I got were US$73 each (3-4 years agao mind).
