help - ae92 gt, radiator, water pump, thermostat!??

Ok here goes my story for the day.

So I've had my car back recently from the headgasket being blown, the mechanic said to keep flushing the radiator, then he'd take it back off me eventually and put the antifreeze etc back in.

So today, I flush my radiator with water get it sorta clean ( its still got heaps of crap in it... ) then fill it back up, start it up and it starts surging real crazily, like 1000rpm up to 1700rpm... Having spilt some water in the process of flushing radiator, I decide to drive it home from work ( where i was doing this ) and see if it stops doing it, sitting at lights its still doing it, but stops after about 30 seconds, think sweet must of just been water somewhere...

Get about 5 more minutes down the road then notice, when I give it a bit of gas in 1st, the throttle is quite laggy and takes a little bit to kick in, think hmmm, weird and pull over at mobil to take a look...

Open up bonnet and steam is building up, badly and the water in the overflow bottle is boiling really really loudly, think crap, let the steam vent for a few minutes then - cue stupid stupid moment - think crap, better let the radiator cap off a little bit to let it cool down, sloooowly take it off, leaning on it, it steams a bit and in my moment of panic i step back and basically the radiator erupts, water going everywhere.... think crap, so start cleaning up, call my dad who comes down, we try start it again, starts surging badly again... pour some more water into the radiator and let it run, but it starts getting really hot again....

so, i've towed it home and going to take it back to the mechanic on monday.... hopefully im not going to have to cut my other arm off to pay for whatevers broken :(

air lock in the cooling system.

you'll need to get the front of the car well above level when you fill it with water, make sure the heater is set to HOT and keep filling until the theremostat opens

check as above. also, is your waterpump etc all ok.
by your description you should be careful or you will be repeating your experience all over again if your unlucky

If the mechanic told you to flush the cooling system yorself, then that person deserves a kick up the ass. The mechanic shouldve done that, and shouldve made sure that the car runs sweetly. If there is a problem you should not have to pay as it is the mechanics fault not yours.

He told me just to keep flushing the radiator out.

I think I have a curse, everytime I touch my car, something goes wrong lol. Really should just leave things to the professionals :\

I'd say the gasket is not fixed properly.

That's what all mechanics do anyway, telling you to flush the radiator.

Me: Hi, I am Akane, you've just tuned my car and the car's overheating
Him: Flush your radiator, it's got lots of crap on it
Me: Errrm I think it's a BHG
Him: flush your radiator
Me: Okay........

Needless to say I flushed it about 5 times, spent so much on anti-freeze.

a month later, you guessed it, oil and water mixing, white gunk under cap.

We always flush cooling systems where i work, if the water looks dirty.
Take a radiator hose off and put a hose up it for about 10 minutes.

As a mechanic I would never give a car back to a customer and tell them to flush the cooling system...

the only thing is, he is probably going to turn around and blame it on me for undertaking the work myself and getting an airlock in it

that said, it's unacceptable for a mechanic to assume that a person knows enough to be able to refill and bled a cooling system.

yeah most people around here probably can, but if I looked at the list of customers at RB Toyota where I do my work ex, there would only be a handful that I would expect to be capable of flushing the cooling system.

Did the mechanic tell you why you had to flush the cooling system? Because of oil residue still being in the cooling system after the BHG.

Didnt actually see this in the thread. But what a dodgy arsed mechanic.

My guess is that you have a blockage/fault in your cooling system which was probably the reason that you had a blown head gasket (due to over heating). I don't think that there are any bleed points on your cooling system... I might be wrong on that, but am assuming it is the same as on an AE82
Fix the problem in your cooling system or you will have another BHG.

yeah he told me the radiator needed to keep being flushed to get the oil residue out.

he did warn me of an airlock, but didn't really go through the process of the flush with me or tell me how not to get it.

in his words
