Just got back from Smith & Smith...

Postby *mel* » Fri Jul 21, 2006 11:30 am

and they don't have any passenger door windows in stock to fit my car, so I just have a sheet of that plastic stuff for a window :(

Last night, between about 6:30 and 10:30pm, someone smashed my window when my car was parked in a carpark on Hillsborough Road in Auckland.

There's like a 'screwdriver pierced' hole in the foam/rubber bit that goes around the glass and the metal behind it is all bent to the right and the smashed glass is all through my car.

After going to all that trouble, all they took was a bag with some personal crap in it - empty wallet, phone that doesn't even turn on, make-up, a book etc - and my car charger for the phone that doesn't work.

I'm glad they didn't take any of my stuff thats actually worth anything; but why bother smashing a window of a car (which has an alarm, but nobody I was with heard it go off :( ) if you aren't even going to take the valuables in it? I don't get it...

They could have taken my shoes, cd's, sunglasses, clothing items etc but none of it was touched. The bag was tucked away behind my seat so they probably didn't even realise it was there until they had the car open. The glovebox was open, but nothing was taken (only had a map in there and a few receipts for work done on my car). They didn't even take my money (about $26) out of the ashtray.

So yeah, the most annoying thing out of all of it is that I have to wait for them to get the glass in to fix my window. Hopefully it won't take tooo long...

Dang sorry to hear that Mel.
Is the damage just to the window or did they physically damage anything else?

It would probably be cheaper buying a window from a wreck or a parts car instead of Smith&Smith. You should try and make a couple of calls to some parts places to find out. Might be able to save yourself a couple of pennies.

Pretty sure its just the window thats damaged.

Insurance is paying for it, so don't have to worry about it costing too much

That sucks to hear!!

Smith and Smith were going to try and charge me double than any other company just to take out a windscreen and install a 2nd one, won't even bother to ring them next time...unless it's covered by insurance :D

Good luck and I hope ya get it fixed asap!!

I had some little pricks smash the 2 quarter windows in my car, and they ignored the headunit and speakers, but took the change from the ashtray - all 25c of it :?

The guy from Smith & Smith has just called me to say they've got the glass in now, so after going around all weekend with a plastic sheet for a window and not being able to use my passenger door at all, it should be getting all fixed up today :D

Also, I just found out last night that my friend's car that was parked a bit further along than mine got broken into that night as well, and a few things of hers were taken.

I think you will find the reason the knicked the phone and charger (even though they didnt work) is because they didnt know it didnt work. Also phones etc are much easier to get good money for that cd's and clothes.

Yeah, that's probably true.

Kinda annoyed they took the phone though, because it still had my sim card in it which had all my contact numbers in my address book on it - now I have to get everyone's numbers again which is a pain (except for a few people's who I would have written down and can look up at home)

Oh well, I already know what new phone I wanna buy, gotta get it by the end of the week because its on sale at the moment.

Going to pick my car up now, just in time to go home from work - it took them that long to fix it since this morning.

See if you can connect the new one to a PC- that way you can often back up the address book and stuff... saves me heaps of time changing my address details, and clearing the in/outbox is easy!

I believe Smith and Smith are still using a paper system, hence the lack of response and knowledge about spare glass nationwide..
