what subs?

Postby nmemr2 » Thu Jul 20, 2006 12:34 am

am looking into new subs. i know well enough what i want and am not fussed on brand terribly much
what i want has to be a 12.
it must have at least 1000wrms
it must be at least dual voice coil

anything that exceeds those specs is a possibility and im hoping some of you can reccomend some things to me

why at least 1000wrms?
why DVC?
what amp are you running the sub off?
what music do you like?
do you have a budget?
how much room do you have for the box?
can you build your own box ie are you handy with power tools?

want 1000wrms as the last subs i had were 800wrms and im keen for louder, hence the system upgrade
DVC so i can lower the resistance load on the amp and thus not need 2-3 amps for said sub
amps will be bought after all the subs and speakers have been decided on
as for budget, im quite open within reason, i know that these specs are going to be costly
room for box is limited as car is a sw20 but i will be custom building the box also after a sub is purchased

The rated power has no effect really on how loud the sub is going to be.

The 1000wrms you see, is the rated power handling capability of the voice coil.

There are a lot fo other factors which influence how a speaker performs, one which you should acquaint yourself with is sensitivity (normally measured as a db@1w/1m).

The higher the number that is shown on the sensitivity figures, the more efficiently the sub will respond to a given amount of power.

What about a pair of moderately rated, efficient SVC subs, running in parallel to present a single grunty amp with a 2ohm load or less? Or one DVC 2ohm sub wired in parallel to present a 1ohm load to an amp that is capable of handling it?

well i am open to options but from the information i currently have about subs and amps is how i have come to this.
presumably a sub with the same efficency and higher power rating would be louder?
and would really like 2 subs as its a small car and it really helps with the balance

800wrms sub being run at 200wrms = 1000wrms being run at 200wrms.

Upgrade your amp before you upgrade your sub. Will save you time, money and hassles.

what sort of music do you listen to?
Are you looking for response or all out power/noise?

What type of subs/amps did you have pushing 800w rms?

An extra 25% power isn't going to be very much louder. In order to get 3dB increase you ned to double the power.

If you current subs are good quality, then I would recommend you upgrade the amps as they probably won't mind being overdriven, at least for a while - at which point you could upgrade the subs.

Besides that, with 2 subs running at 800rms each you should be pushing 150dB - are you mad or just want to go deaf for fun? :)

Its a rather generic reply but....

Digital Designs 3512 dual 4 run off a suitable monoblock tuned to 45hz will rattle you up some - i assume you just want to be loud and have others know about it lol we'll this will do the job very nicely

listen to lots of music, depending on my mood and who else is in the car.
both subs and amps were cheap but matched nicely, dont think the efficiency was too good as i only managed to get 130db from it

and thanks dee cee for actually answering my question, have thought bout DD before, anything else stack up?

There's something wrong with your amps or your subs, or the way they're setup. That's far too quiet.

To give you some idea of quality vs quanity:

1x Phoenix Gold ZX350 amp @ 50x2 RMS (12v, 4 ohms) (yes, 50 watts not 500)
2x Boston Pro Series 12" Subs

= 138dB, with sound quality to boot.

The gear is 7+ years old and hasn't missed a beat.

Moral of the story: buy good quality gear and it'll go loud, sound good, and last you a long time.

Because PG dont under rate anything ever ;)

The DD would be a good bet if you're wanting something with huge power handling without costing you a fortune. You'll want a fairly decent amp to keep up with that though. You want an amp capable of producing more power than your sub is rated at. Its not going to take a lot to get loud in an MR2. That single 10 that Alex has goes plenty loud enough to make you want to turn it down a little.

And I hope your battery/alternator are up to the task too

Where are you planning to mount the sub? I hope under the frunk, because theres no way you're going to fit a real '1000wRMS' sub behind the seats unless you are 4'6" ;) And i concur - 130dB with an 800wRMS sub is ludicrous, Clarkie gets 139dB official on the Termlab with a single 200w 8" ;) So i would say the original sub rating was either talking out its arse, or something was set up incorrectly.

As for MR2 sub choice, i can help there, considering i have one ;) Unless you're willing to use the frunk, you'll get a much better result using 2 smaller subs. For simple, i'd go with a pair of Rainbow Hammer 10"s or a pair of DLS Magnesium MW110's - the MW's look like they were designed for MR2's, they are flat, wide, and the ideal ported box volume is almost exactly equivalent to the space available behind the seat with the seat at a natural incline :)

ok.
scrap what i have said so far.
i managed 130db (measured with termlab by erkel from DD) i liked it but am wanting louder.
to me the next logical step up is to 140db
what can i buy that will get me there?
