big port 4age: high pitched squeel from air intake

Postby Pies » Wed Jul 26, 2006 6:54 pm

what is the high pitched squeel from my air intake (or that area) when my foot is lightely on the gas. im only gettin it when the car is under load, not in nuetral, and its farkin irritating!
its a hell of alot more noticable when im running the car with a pod filter (or no filter at all).
can anyone shed some light on this?

is it a whistling sound at all?
i noticed with my 5mge that when i was running a pod filter instead of the factory air box i would get a whistle sound coming through the intake.

might be something as simple as that, nothing can be done about that i dont think, unless i re did my intake pipe or something.

90% sure its a whistling sound. could hear it through the standard intake with a k&n panel filter but no where near as loud. thought it might be a vacum leak but then i remembered id heard it on my old FXGT, and a couple of others i'd been for a ride in that were using pods.

so im guessing it is just normal. but damn its irritating!

Try a 20v with individal throttles on low throttle...

ug..

id say its just airflow through a small gap (same way you wistle through your lips).

Its the idle screw adjuster. Screw it all the way in and the noise goes away, along with the ability to idle.

I've got that whistle goin on too. Only happens at certain throttle positions. If you open it up more and more throughout the rev range, you can keep it whistling a while :D

My SW doesn't, you sure that wasn't turbo spool you were hearing?

From memory, didn't the Gen 2 3SGTE have TVIS??

EDIT: After delving into the FUQ section, and reading a post by Malcolm (As well as seeing photographic evidence supplied by him), I see that yes, they did have TVIS.

I'm wondering if its to do with the TVIS plates causing a resonation of air through the small gaps between them and their housing at different air velocity?

Half the FXGT's I've ever seen all made a hell of a whistley noise when they boot it (relative term  ),

Always wondered what it was, its only those I seem to notice doing it.

It doesn't bother me at all. I surprised how you can get so worked up about it! :D

i stress out easily :P

well i tried it. filled the manifold with expanding foam and quickly stuck the pod on the end and started it before it set so that air would still be able to get through and make its own little path. works fuken mint now. im guessing that some of the no more gaps set on the pistons, raising the compression to unbeleivably high levels. now im blitzing 20v's!

seriously...

looks like im just gonna put up with it for now. hopefully will have stereo in again soon as insurance pays out :)

I think its the noise of the air going passed the throttle plate when its partially closed. Mine did it once I removed the stock airbox and filter. Put the standard airbox and perhaps a K&N panel filter in it with stock resonance chamber to get rid of the noise.
