I did a bad thing

Postby EarthwurmJurm » Thu Jul 27, 2006 7:08 pm

To cut a long story short, I was changing my spark plugs and overtightened the plug on the 4 cylinder and sheared it off.

Is this going to cost me shitloads ?

what should I do ? :(

So you've snapped the plug off at the thread? Or is the hex still there?

thats ok man. ya still have 3 cylinders. as long as there is still some spark plug sealing that cylinder off it will run sweet as. just take a speaker wire from the coil to whats left of the spark plug and bobs ya aunty! :D

lol... Dont listen to pies.

Get a air compressor and blow all the shit (bits of spark plug) out of the hole, then get a spanner onto the hex and get it out.

Just blow the shit out first.

You don't want it in the motor.

If you think you might have some, send ALOT of air down the spark plug hole after you have taken it out to make sure there is nothing left, then nice new plug and do it up just a bit.

Sykotic likes blow jobs!

Yea, that will require a bit of work to get out. If you've tightened the thread that much, then its gonna be stuck in there good. I'd say let it soak in some CRC before you try anything.

a BIG easyout or similar should get it out fairly easy.
then I'd get a small hose and tape it onto a vacuume cleaner to suck anything which may have fallen inside.
and next time, follow the instructions for putting in a plug, they dont need much torgue really, especially not that much, you are lucky it didnt strip the thread really.

Damn, I've never seen that before! I've seen threads stripped on heads.. but never a plug that completely broke apart! I'd use an easyout, its a little punch-like device with a hex on top, that you whack into the hole, and unscrew it.

What sort of plugs were they? how hard did you tighten?

Easyoutsare shit and will likely shatter when trying to undo...

Find someone with some welding skills and weld onto the thread and unscrew it if you have the room to.

Ive had plenty of success with easyouts in the past.
cheap ones are crap, but for the size of the hole this will have a decent one, of a fair size should be fine.
I agree welding would be alright to, if space permits
what engine are we talking about here?

I didnt think I was doing them real tight, I was holding the top of the wrench not even the handle so there wasn't much leverage.

They were quite tight when I undid them but im guessing now that's because they were hot and expanded.

I guess I will have to take the rocker cover off before I can do anything as there is quite a bit of distance between the hole at the top and the plugs.

The engine is a blue top 4age and NGK plugs

sykotic I started it for literally 2 seconds then turned it off.

I'm thinking this might be a job for the mechanic.. I'm pretty newbie. : P

Damn, I've seen Champion plugs shit themselves in a similar fashion before, but not NGK.
My advice to you would be to take it to a mechanic if you're not confident trying to get it out, you might be able to easy out it.
