Aftermarket Cams, Kelford VS HKS.

Postby Adydas » Mon Jul 31, 2006 9:27 am

just want to check on somthing, Kelford cams have a good name for them self but i learnt they " make " the cams to order as aposed to branded HKS cams that are premade to some extent.

I guess what im trying to ask is whats better? would it be reccomended to go with a set of HKS cams, or get kelford to " Make me some "..

Send your whole head in to Kelford. Then they can make and adjust etc etc the head with the cams so it all works nicely together.

If i want bragging rights ill be sure to come to you first for advice ok mate, Uhhhh..

I asked on HKS as i know there is a kit spacifically for my engine avalible, at no point did i specify either

a) The cost
b) That i wanted " Wank Factor "

The question was simple, whats better an off the shelf unit ( that happens to be made by HKS ) or getting Kelford to " Make " me a cam, In short whats kelfords reputation like in making cams?

off the shelf is ok, if you can match it to your application
whereas kelfords match it straight off. even better if they can do all the set up work on it.

i personally would go for the kelfords. i am not a fan of off the shelf cams. especially ones made for other markets

^^^ Yep that's exactly why I'm going to be using Kelford with my head.

They custom do everything to work together most efficiently (sp?) for your application. And they have years of proven experience in all sorts of different applications.

In some cases that might be true. However, in the case of the 3S-GTE, HKS have the cams sorted out very well, and have a large range that's been proven time and time again to work. Even the "mild" 264's are good for over 600HP.

Thousands of satisfied 3S-GTE customers is proof enough that they work well with this engine, which is enough for me not to consider trying a relatively unproven combination of Kelfords & the 3S-GTE. Not that there is anything wrong with Kelfords of course.

which is why i covered myself with this line:

off the shelf is ok, if you can match it to your application

my meaning is if you can match the specs to your needs then all is good.
but some ppl expect gains just coz it has HKS on it.

i guess it also depends on the circles you move in, go to your local race track and youll find a lot of 3sgtes running kelford cams. whereas the local street car drags youll prob find HKS.

I once heard on teh interweb that HKS has patented their HKS cam designs, and there are so many people out there try to copy them, due to HKS hit the nail on the head so to speak, on the 3S-GTE application.

kelford cams.. :/ I don't know man, I don't see how some kiwi dude down south with a CNC, grind a few bits off a metal stick here and there can outperform HKS who has such a long history of racing development :/

The main point is, you've spent so much $ and effort on this, would you save yourself a measly couple hundy? :|

Do it right (although you DO live in South Auckland :P )

Akane it might pay to do some research before spouting off bullshit at Kelford. I think they have a bit more experience with CAMS and Head Work than you are currently aware of...

Cliff, dont worry about what other people think. just buy what you think will do the job you want it to do.
