What went wrong with this engine? (56k warning)

Postby cosi » Mon Jul 31, 2006 10:24 pm

These photos are a bluetop 4age with what I think was a leaking head gasket. The engine was iding at 2000rpm and the crank pressure seemed to be really high. Also had clouds of smoke coming out the exhaust, oil literally dripping out the exhaust pipe.

Im not sure if putting a new head gasket is going to fix it. I cant see where it was leaking from which makes me suspicious that the problem was something else. Just need a quick fix, but something that works for a few weeks. Its going to be raced

Piston rings would be causing the smoking maybe or you were getting water in the chambers. what wouldve looked like oil out the exhaust wouldve been water mixed with the carbon deposits in the exhaust.
Or you could have worn out rings causing it to burn oil

If its the rings I think it will be easier/cheaper just to replace the entire thing. Before I do that, is there any way to be sure?

Yeah I know repco filters are sh*t. Thanks for pointing that out

Thats' a lot of oil in #2 combustion chamber. With no obvious leaks, my first thought would be absolutely buggered valve stem seals.. but both valves on one cylinder? That, and the piston appears to have seen a lot more heat than the other 3.. maybe broken ring.. I'm putting my money on #2 ftw.

blowen

Postby fxgt race » Tue Aug 01, 2006 3:06 pm

my brothers has just done the same thing in this race car just two days ago,we a putting another engine in as the manfield track day is looming fast, blowing blue smoke and spitting oil out the exhaust on idle.Im about to pull the head off and have a look myself, will be either rings or valve seals.brought a rolled fxgt for $350 for another engine which is the cheapest option to get a going again.

valves

Postby fxgt race » Tue Aug 01, 2006 4:39 pm

as rs13 said looks like valve stem seals by the look of oil there, had the head off the brothers car and it looks like blowen head gasket by the amount off water in no 4 cylinder but this does not explain the blue smoke it was blowing so still could be rings.

$20 says ring lands on at least one piston.

The #1 cause of all 4age's and 4agze's failures. this engine is shot mate, unfortunately
