got the car back from tuning today. had larger 3sgte injectors put in along with a larger fuel pump , and the boost worked up , along with some more finetuning of coldstart and driveability etc.
very basic rundown of setup is low comp gze bottom end , silvertop 20 valve head and sti vf24 turbo. audi 38mm external wastegate+profec b spec 2 for boost control.

Image

Image

blue= low boost 15psi and green =high boost 20-18psi

ended up with 182kw@18ish psi.
all was good tuning up to 18psi ,boost was stable right through.
but then had a slight issue with the turbo when attempting to run 20psi.
it would only get 20psi at lower revs and then taper off to 18psi later on. so peak power is 18psi , but check out the effect 20psi has on the torque :D not sure why its tapering off , has been suggested the turbos limits have been reached , any suggestions welcome.

this setup has always been laggier than would be expected, not sure why but yeah it still seems to do the trick.
have only managed a couple of quick squirts on the motorway heading home , but it feels and sounds like a totally different car, it covers large distances very quickly, ill need to recalibrate my driving to suit

previous best dyno was 174kw@15psi , on a different dyno , so can be disregarded, but shows the difference between the two. speedtechs dyno apparently reads quite low.

Wholly fark check out that torque increase at high boost!

Very impressive, as for the boost, would have to be the boost controller wouldnt it? werent you having problems with the old one? maybe time for a slightly better turbo?

cool stuff

old boost controller was fried , appears to be a cracked transistor so im going to attempt to repair it. but its been replaced with a whole new unit anyway.

yeah im looking at larger turbo options within the vf series so i can use the manifold again , but i may end up ditching the vf longterm anyway. it sounds dammmmn cool tho :D thats the wank factor of a BB turbo.

good effort mate, in regards to the boost dropping off, i had that with my little turbo in the high revs high psi, 18psi, it would slightly drop off to like 16.5 - 17psi in top of 3rd and 4th down the drag strip. part of the reason i'v egone for quite a large turbo capable of running lots of boost. gotta leave le-way for more power

anywayz, good effort, let you know in the coming weeks how much i get.

Sweet man! A good 30kw on mine 8) (ya bastard).

If you fix that boost controller I might be keen on it  How many boost settings does it have, just the 2?

Can't wait to see your car on the track man 8)

yeah it has off (wastegate setting) , low and hi , i hav a box of untouched parts for it and the old unit , so i can just swap it in to test it if i get it working. has all sorts of cool features i didnt know about til i read the manual.

Well Im currently just using a solenoid controlled by the Link and the "low' setting is the external's spring.

Keep me posted cause I'm not sure how well my setup will hold boost once I've raised it.

Any idea how much was left in the injectors? I might just go for some 440's or something.

not sure on an exact % but andre reckoned it had shitloads left in the fuel system , that was with 3sgte injectors that were flowtested at 500cc , not sure whether 440 or 540,but have any injectors u get tested first. saves finding out on the dyno :D

Very nice, need to get my ass on a dyno now. Very impressive number 8) Something for me to look for in the future.

Boost is probably dropping off as a result of the turbo reaching maximum flow. Does the wastegate open at all?

wastegate is barely audible at high boost , probly why you can hear the turbo so much better.its not releasing much at all at that pressure. i did a bit of digging a round and it appears that the turbo may very well be reaching maximum flow.

how bout you donate a manifold and one of your truck turbos barry

its lightyears ahead of where it was before.
the first time i planted boot in 2nd gear, i backed off straight away in suprise.it takes off, then just when you think the powers levelling out it keeps building as the revs rise , albeit very quickly.
3rd gear is great on the motorway, you pick a point in the distance , hold on and before you know it you're there :D
i can only dream what it would be like with 330kw 8O

kind of pointless on the roads really , its like having a sledgehammer to hit a thumb tack in :?

IMO the silvertop head is a restriction without some mods...
The ports on the silvertop is completly diff to the blacktop.

its not a truck turbo its just a decent sized turbo 8) and I can hook you up with one for a good price with manifolds.

and well my 2nd gear goes spin spin, and my 3rd geer goes spin spin so i just gota wait till i hit 4th and 5th :D

my head has been toyed with.the guy who built the engine took to the exhaust ports i believe, ive also wondered if this is affecting the spoolup at all. i think i had 2nd hook up 3 times out of about 15 attempts since ive had the car back :? when it half grips it tries the old spontaneous lane change trick on me :D
3rd gear seems to be hooking up changing down at 100km , but i havent had too much chance to suss it all out yet.
i may be back to you for a turbo+manifold when this one lets go

That's all I run and I run 18 to 20psi. I get a bit of spike, but the link does it well enough

I have flow tested the 440's and the 550's.

The 440's flow 500cc at 3.0bar/45psi
the 550's flow 600cc at 3.0bar/45psi

Yep if your wastegate is hardley opening on the entire run your at maximum flow, might as well disconnect that hose because your pretty much free boosting 8)

Sounds like a very fun car to drive  FWD turbos are awsome at being uncontrollable under boost

but remember the wastegate is not needing to let off as much gas at higher boost because it needs to sustain more exhaust flow through the turbo, whereas at lower boost, it needs to let off lots to keep the boost lower

but at high boost the car has more power, therefore more ex gases at low boost, my gates are usually way louder at high boost.
