drunken challenge

Postby barryogen » Fri Aug 04, 2006 10:23 am

so the other night, someone bought into question the technical abilities of a group of my mates... and so it is such that I have to announce our plan(as impossible as it may sound now that we're sober).

We must build a car, capable of doing 0-100km/h in under 4 seconds, ~300km/h top speed(on a dyno seeing as none of us are comfortable doing over 200), and must show 250 on a track(any track).

And... the big 2... we must have it done in the next 8 years, and it is to cost no more than $30,000 total.

So... anyone got some spare parts sitting around?

I was thinking something like a Lotus 7 replica made with chromoly rather than steel, to keep strength up and weight to a minimum, with a Lexus or Nissan V8, suitable manual gearbox, and probably a custom diff to stretch it's legs a bit.

The Nissan 4.5L V8 seems to be a better option sofar, but it somewhat costly at ~2k + delivery(Lexus/Toyota one is ~$1400 + delivery).

Anyone know of a suitible GB for a car with ~700HP, and gobs of torque thats also cheap as chips?

A 7 at anything over 200km would surly be as scary as $&#$% haha.

Sounds like a good plan. Good luck.

I've been a passenger at 220 round timaru in a 7, it was very cool, felt like you were in a super low flying open roof plane, wind at that speed was like having your face shot with those plastic BB pellets(open face helmet).

Should be an interesting project if we complete it or not.

Lexus V8's are cheap as chip's now you will get one with Auto Box for under a grand easy. Making it manual is the expensive part as you'll need bell housing etc etc think Mike down tat the Turbo Shop was going to make manual conversion kit's for them not sure if he went through with it or not.
Good luck Davo but it's going to take a bit of money me think's!

like I said we have money limits too... so some/alot of it will have to be done by me and the mates... the rest will have to be paid for out of the $30k.

interestingly enough, we were chatting about it earlier, and have decided that all it has to do is hit those particular points... it doesnt have to look good doing it... go the aluminium sheets for the body

Bolt a couple of 1UZs together to have a V16. Can run them both of same computer. Then quad turbo it. Then put it in a DX wagon. Go on, do it

Oh, and 300 on a dyno will be nothing like 300 on the road. Anything should be able to do any speed its geared to on something with no air/wind resistance. COMPLETELY different on the road.

Where is the money coming from?

You could give it to me and we could make my car do that no prob!
Or we could buy my mates 600hp At the wheels RX 7
Its only $25k. It does easy 10 second runs only while in development tuning.
Much faster now and road legal!

Go on get it!
I baggs bein the test pilot!!!!

I know that 300 on a dyno is easy... I don't need to make this any harder by pointing this out.

Shopping for 1UZ at the moment, already have suitible GB(yay)... LSD with the right ratio could be interesting/hard to get hold of.

Money is coming from mates back pockets... ~6k collected sofar, although ~1500 is spent sofar too... and we need ~4500 of chromoly for the frame.

Vehicle will be sold via tardme once completed... although I'm hoping to buy it first assuming it works... yay the enso competitor

heh, got good and bad news today... the suitable gearbox had already been promised to someone else... the good news is that after chatting to a few "1UZ people", they said that it would have been a fine choice if not adding boost, but that with pretty much any boost I would have hit it's limit very quickly.

so, yeah... suitable GB for a 1UZ?

Anyone know why small truck GB that are built for that sort of torque arent used? size? weight? 25cm shift length?
