isnt there whole race series using that engine? surely someone must be involved with that somehow? toyspeed is full of motorracing whores :D

i have heard from a lot of people that they are a very peaky engine, they are still only about 5 years old though , so they havent really trickled down into a price range where people are gonna start getting serious with them.

Go out and drive a 2zzge car. Fantastic! It pulls very hard and then the VVTL thing happens and you go even faster!
Stu (Taupo toyspeed occasional poster) let me drive his Will 2 years ago. Awesome!
I understand that they don't tolerate overrevving on the downshift. Maybe some other probs also. I think most probs were on the early 2zzges.

In reply to Jeremy, yeah, but they're all built up by Lynn Rogers, at a cost of a zillion dollars each, and are dry sumped and stuff. So you're probably going to be dropping somewhere in the region of $20k to get a similar set up, and have to wait 18 months to get it ;)

The class I race in is 0 to 1800cc. looking at a 7AGTE,
but how about,

2ZZGTE??

Main problem I forsee is budget.

not that much leon!!

they are stock engines. just the out side bits are changed.

i have heard of a few failures of the oil pumps. however i only know of 2 first hand and one was a pulley damaged in an accident and not picked up on repair and the other was supposedly an aftermarket pulley.....

so yes there has been issues, but its not an endemic problem imo

I was reading some Celica forum from the US, and they also reckoned that underdrive pulleys tend to cause them to shear the oil pump drives. Was a few there that had it happen to them.

I'll have to come down there and have a play. My Lancer fits the bill nicely.... just need to fit some road tyres and stiffener her a bit.

Remember that anything turbo you multiply your cc rating by 1.7. So you're going to be out of the 1800cc class if you're over about 1050cc with a turbo. 4AGTE = 2720cc as far as engine rating goes.

1587cc x 1.7 = 2698cc so would you not be 2500cc-3000cc class :?

As for the lancer not sure of exact cc but suspect would also be in the over 2500cc class

Matt's talking about the 7agte IE a 7afe with a 4age head and a turbo strapped to it. Its natively 1762cc so it gives a corrected cc of 2995.4 IE just under the 3ltr limit. The Lancer unfortunately is 1834cc so wont compete in the same class.

Well if you wan to get technical, here are the specs.
I run class T2.

Class C 0 - 1850cc naturally aspirated
Class B 1851 – 3000cc naturally aspirated
Class A 3001 – 6000cc naturally aspirated
Class T2 0 - 1850cc forced induction
Class T1 1851 – 3000cc forced induction

And Weights

4.4 Minimum racing weight for all cars with forced induction engines for the following swept volume categories is:
Class T2 0 to 1850cc 980kg
Class T1 1851 to 2000cc 1050kg
2001 to 2500cc 1280kg
2501 to 3000cc 1350kg

The Lancer is in the same class. Although a couple of hundred kilos too heavy.

Sports saloon regs are diff to any others (ie club regs), I guess their class specifications are just explained differently

no, the Lancer is within the regs. they are minimum weights. so the trick is to take 300kg out, then fit balancing ballast up to the weight limit.

1120kg stock. I haven't weighed it yet, but with the full cage in it I doubt it will be light. I certainly wouldnt expect it to be under the T2 limit. It is a big 4WD car after all.

Lotsa fun.
Not torqueless in the lower revs as some say. They have a definite kick at 6000RPM as it engages the other cam.

They have been semi known for blowing oil pumps apart, usually caused by a mis-shift of somesort, mine suffered from an exploding/disintergrating oil pump, Lotus sorted it by changing how the H pattern for gear changes was, apparently putting a mild slant on it.

They have been semi known to bend valves/valve float if you play in the higher revs too much, but thats sorted with some stronger valve springs.

This is by no means a be all and end all post on the 2zz... but it could be helpfull.

Staying NA...
TRD make a kit for it with higher compression pistons and some other goodies.

Monkey Wrench Racing have a few kits and have after market cams for it... they also have a stroker kit for it to take it to almost 2L.

Supercharger wise, Blitz kit is ~$8k NZ, and two weeks to send factory ECU to somewhere to be re-written, apparently runs lean in the upper revs. 225WHP

Greddy SC kit is ~$5k, no intercooler, and about the same performance as the Blitz kit... also known to run lean in higher RPM. 230WHP

Turbo kits
Monkey Wrench Racing, Hass Auto, and C2power all have kits, all put out about 250WHP

There is a few exceptions to this... there is one or two known to be ~380WHP, and the highest one I have seen online is 420WHP, but nothing has been offered as hard proof for these.

I know that this isn't the intended use, but in standard form, the 180HP(crank) is a lot of fun in a FWD, now that I have got a bigger stronger sway bar, a lot of the single spinning has gone, replaced with traction that I didn't think it was capable of... LSD on the way for future upgrades.

Incidentally, there is a lot of info of people putting them in the little gay MRS or MR2 Spyder as known in the US... and with an LSD, they're meant to be a lot of fun.
