Overheating 91 Celica

Postby Capin-Neemo » Mon Aug 07, 2006 1:53 pm

Hi guys please i need help!

HELPPPP!

I recently brought a Celica 1991 with a 3S-GE and it ran nicely when took for a test drive the problem is this....

After a long drining time at high speed say an hour of open road driving it get hot and by hot i mean i need the heater on full bore and to slow down to 80km/h or i get steam.

I have replaced the thermostat back flushed everything, checked the rad its fine and the wekend just gone pulled the cam covers off to replace water pump, witch i found has already been replaced!

This problem is very strange everyone ive talked to is pretty stumped someone has had this problem before the water pump has been replace and the oil coler has ben removed!

Any help would be apreciated and has anyone else had this problem ive looked on the net and cant find anyone thats had this probelm well not with the same symptoms!

Hellp

If heater helps, the problem maybe is in blocked radiator.

Same thing happened to my sw20, everyone was quick to point to BHG but I could control the overheating with the heater. After a cleanout of the rather blocked radiator it never overheated, even with a 300+km open road drive with plenty of boosting in the last 100 or so km.

when the car is warmed up, try and feel the difference in temperature on top vs bottom of radiator, you might of flushed the radiator but it still can be blocked by rust, if say bottom is cold and top is hot, it is defenetly blocked...

Yea we thought that but both pipes are equall temp and pressure...

Its a very strange problem i know and only seems to do it when it wants to the only thing i can think of is a blocked head somwhere, or the head has a crack but i dont have any of the signs of that i.e

no loss of water once it spits out the over flow it sucks it back once its cool
no water in oil or vice versa

so anyone got any other idea it seems very strange!

maybe you got an air lock (which is common with S engines), just jack up the front of the car with the cap of leave it idle for awhile, until it is hot, keep adding water, it will spew it back a few times, but add water untill thermostat opens couple of times (usually sudden flow of water + radiator fan starts going is the sign when thermostat opens)... then put the cap back on, leave it running untill it reaches operating pressure, drop the car down, leave it to cool.
Make sure the cap is working ($12.95 from supercheap for new, if in doubt)...

I also had this problem with the missus' car.

Cleaned out and flushed radiator, replaced coolant, replaced thermostat, hoses, temp switch....everything. Thought to myself "hey, it cant be the water pump, that was only replaced 6-9 months ago."

Turns out the retard mechanic who replaced the waterpump didnt use any proper coolant after the change, and all the fins on the pump were gone. So it was turning but pumping no water.

The new mechanic that replaced couldnt believe it. He was like "I thought no way was it the waterpump coz it was brand new and shiney on the outside, but when it came off there was nothing there."

Anyway, that might be it. Thanks for listening to my story.
