GA70 Supra manual conversion wiring?

Postby quick6 » Wed Aug 09, 2006 7:44 pm

Hi, I am about to convert my 86 GA70 Supra auto to a manual and in order to do so I bought an entire 88 ga70 manual to strip the bits off. The mechanical side of the swap is not a problem as I have completed this type of thing before and it is very well documented on various websites. What I am after is solid information about the wiring side of things, so that I don't have to start from scratch (like on my civic....but thats another story). I will obviously have the manual ECU, would it be advantagous to use it? If so do I have to change the whole body loom in order to do so? The donor car has a digital dash, which I would like to use (I am an 80's child!) I believe you have to change the 'dash loom' in order to do so. Is the so called 'dash loom' a separate plug and play affair? Would it be easy to connect the engine loom and dash loom out of the donor car with the body loom in my existing one? (This way I would get the dash and the manual ecu). Sorry for all the questions, any experiences/info/links would be appreciated (doesn't need to be 1ggte specific)

PS No 'get a decent engine' replies thanks, I have heard it all before which is why I am doing this in the first place. Maybe I am a fool.....time will tell.

hey, you can find a complete wiring diagram here. you need to trick the car into thinking its in park or neutral (its just a case of joining 2 wires, sorry i dont know which ones) before it will start without the auto transmission (if you use the auto ecu - less work) or you can swap the ecu and loom (if its different) (more work)

re: the digidash, i dont know if the plugs are different, best way to find out is to look i guess, if they look the same, it might be a good idea to compare the colours of the wires, just in case (you never know).

the engine and dash loom should in theory be quite easy to swap, probably plug and play, most of the work will be removing the interior parts so you can access all the little clips and connectors

I use an auto ecu in my car, which is manual, and it doesn't seem to hinder performance at all when compared with other supras

the wires that need to be bridged should be on the engine loom... not to do with the ECU.

If you can, use as much as the donor loom as possible. the dash loom should be different also right? does the GA70 turbo's have boost gauges or anything like that?

I'm lazy and can't be bothered reading the other posts (sorry)

But basically, all you need to do is wire up the auto inhibitor, will find out which colours they are, these wires are plugged into your automatic transmission and when unplugged the loom that is connected to your engine should hang somewhere near your intake runners. You may want to find the reverse switch wires on the auto loom,(i never did, but you don't require brake lights for a warrant so meh).

Other than that, no other electronics need to be touched. (sorry i don't know about the converting to electronic dash)

Oh, and can you PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE, measure the pushrod (from slave to clutch fork) length, i will even come and help you out if you live in hamilton, i am THAT desperate to find out its length :(

Thanks for the replies/link guys. Yes the plugs/loom for the digital dash are very different is my understanding. Also the donor car has cruise control, which I would like. So I guess it comes down to how much work I am willing to put in as to whether I get all the bits I want! I really don't want to have to take EVERYTHING out to change the whole body loom, which is why it would be great if the engine/dash loom just plugged into the body loom (ie no tracking down wires and soldering.....been there done that). I have to pull the dash apart anyway as I have a broken speedo cable and while I am in the area I was going to scrap the A/C gear.
MrOizo, Yes the donor car has a factory boost guage (on the d/dash) but the recipient does not. Loved your old supra by the way, I would have looked seriously into buying it when it was up for sale but I had just bought an MR2 turbo and I still had an AE92 Trueno GTZ and a terrano. My partner would have left me.
Quint, I will definitely measure that rod for you. I will politely decline your offer of help though as I live in Wanganui. I am picking the car up on the weekend so I hope you can wait till then.
Thanks again for the prompt replies....keep 'em coming.

To disable the auto inhibitor solder the Black and white strip wire together with the black and blue stripped cable. Don't forget to take out the oil lines for your auto box :)

Cheers in advance.
