Interesting point, was the car insured? If so the owner will have to buy the motor back from the insurer (assuming he wants it, may be pretty thrashed) as claim settlement passes title to the insurance company.

that is true, but if it was my ex motor id be wanting something done about it as the low life scum had stolen it.
why should he be making money off it?

but yes it would belong to insurance company now

Definitely agree there on wanting the culprit found, just think if I didn't have a claim on the motor (assumption of insurance cover here) my approach may be to ignore the legal channels for some real pay back.

if hes been driving around in it for 4-5 months, id say he wouldve needed the whole car to have done that, since he bought the car in March, that doesnt allow much time to get the drive train all swapped over.

if he did buy the motor as a package, it would still be likely that he would be missing little bits and pieces.

the fact that he has most probably the radiator that was in the stolen car, due to the radiator cap being the same, i am pretty confident he wouldve just swapped the bits over in its entirity.
This would only take a weekend to do, by someone that was skilled, where as putting an engine in and doing the conversion like that without the donor car is much more time consuming.

this is why the bumper is red, and all the bits are the same.

i hope he gets nailed

Doesnt matter, buying goods that are stolen, regardless of if you knew, is an offence. Some of the time you may be able to get off lightly if you have a very good (expensive) lawyor, however, if this is infact the stolen car, regardless of if he knew, or payed for it, its not anymore.

yep.
the observation about the radiator cap, is that an engine doesnt usually come with a radiator, so its more likely that he bought that car, or at least had access to the complete car.

that engine is pretty distinctive, especially the exhaust manifold.
