Non Toyota Project Car

Postby Blackrazor » Wed Aug 09, 2006 9:55 pm

Hey guys.

Well we've finally got some of our old bills out of the way, got a few more to pay for then i'm going to start saving for a long term project car, the type of thing i can keep for years and years and use as a weekend cruiser/tourer or show car.

At my current budget and savings projections i'll be able to rustle up $20-25k within a couple years. Within those guidelines, i've done a bit of research into the types of cars that suit what i want to acheive. I really want a car that is performance oriented but not too showy - something i can drive around in without feeling like a tryhard prat. I'd also prefer something european. I've come up with the following three options :

• BMW M3 Evolution E30
• Porsche 944 TurboS
• Porsche 968

A bit of background information and pics for those unfamiliar with these cars :

BMW M3 Evo E30
• 2.5L N/A Straight 4 - 175kw, 0-100 in 6.2s

Image

Porsche 944 TurboS
• 2.5L Turbocharged Straight 4 - 184kw, 0-100 in 5.5s

Image

Image

Porsche 968
• 3.0L N/A Straight 4 - 177kw, 0-100 in 5.9s

Now the reason i'm posting this all up, is to see if anyone knows anyone who owns any of one of these three cars, and can provide me with some feedback as to how much maintenance and upkeep either require, and if anyone knows some key things to look for when scouting for one.

Cheers!

Dan

hey, sorry i cant help with facts or info for you.
but the 944 would be my pick out of that bunch.

there is bugger all leg room in the back of those, so if you need to carry passengers around forget it..

but they are bloody nice cars, and if i had the money i would probably look at getting one.

My dads lawyer had one about 13 years ago, in gold.

it was wicked.

I say go for the 944 turbo, they're awesome looking beasts and you get to tell people you own a Porsche. I'm considering purchasing a poverty Porsche (924) some time in the future.

The new M3's ('91 onward) are S6's. The E30's are S4's. The reason i want an E30 is that they are light, inconspicuous, and arent a wannabe status symbol for accountants like the other M3's are.

Because its a project car, something different. I know i could by a Supra etc that could blow them into the weeds for that, but its still 'only' a Supra.

Plus, personal preference i guess.

They're faster than a 'nesian with a KFC voucher, but its a Ford. I swore to myself long ago that the only Ford or Holden i would ever own would be a Mustang.

I love Porsches but would choose the Beemer. You can always chuck a six or an eight or something in it later anyway. I think the couple of Porsches you listed may have more maintenance issues than the BMW too, from what i've read/heard/seen. 8)

If you want a proper EVO e30 m3 double your budget.

The 968 is a bit of a girls Porsche, go for the 944 turbo.

I'd be going for a e36 m3 however, in Dakar yellow with LTWs and full black leather

Ummm.... thats the pure definition of "M3".

What do you want from the project exactly? Buying an inconspicuous car to drive around in isn't exactly a project. Anything Euro is likely to cost you more in upkeep and when they break. They should hold their value better for some reason (yet to work that out).

And that M3 would stand out quite well btw

I know its not the 'best' example given the high kms etc, but $20k will net you a nice one easy if you look around
