Was it right for me to post up my findings in my initial post?

I posted it on a few major forums, as to expose the theif and so that people were aware.

Posting the auction here and saying "hey look it's a stolen car / engine" was incredibly stupid.

It should have been handed to the police, and left the e-mafia out of it. It was blatantly obvious to anyone who knows the internet is a public place, with a number of total dickheads using it, that this would get back to the person with the ad in a matter of hours.

If the car had been as hot as was suspected, it would have "mysteriously vanished" again, and the person whose car this was initially would have been the loser, again.

If you see stolen stuff, keep your yap shut, and call the police.

^^^

Incredibly good advice. My boss's car trailer turned up on Trade Me approx 3 weeks after it was stolen, we just got the Police involved and made sure that we "won" the auction then sent the cops to collect it for us at the time we arranged with the crooks. Only after it was recovered did we think it safe to post our success against the original Stolen posting. Low risk, high chance of success and all it took was a little patience on our side. Of course it wasn't as much fun as letting the e-Mafia loose
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

Well sorry then for bringing it to the attention of the original owner and/or other interested parties.

From now on if I see stolen gear, I'll do as Leon states and leave it be. As it's none of my business in the first place.

My apologies to all.

Thanks for the great advice Leon

I think what Leon meant was inform the owner through PM and the police, unfortunately you can't trust people on the net with that sort of info so it is best to have it resolved first.

Meh at least it gave you all something to gossip about.

And I did say the Police were informed etc. etc. so what's the big deal.

Didn't know there was a PC way of doing this aswell.

Quoted, as you seem to have missed a small, but crucial point.

Have a nice day.

Would you have done any better?

Like I said, the Police were informed and were dealing with the matter before I even posted the thread.

How about you >
