3S-FE to 3S-GE Engine conversion

Postby Mcpoon » Wed Jul 26, 2006 3:39 pm

Ok, i currently have a '97 Auto Celica with a 3S-FE in it. I have been thinking about swapping it with a 3S-GE to take advantage of the twin cam. But first i have a few questions.

-Would i gain much power from the conversion?
-What parts would i need, minus the engine?
-How much will labour cost?
-How much do the 3S-GE engines cost from wreckers(approx.)?
-Would it be worth doing this conversion or just buying a celica with twin cam?
-Will i need a cert?

Thanks, Peter.

It will undoubtably be much easier/cheaper/etc selling your car and buying one with a 3SGE.

Especially if you're paying someone else to do the work.

Dont forget to take into consideration the auto gearbox and ecu as im sure youd find this wouldnt be as simple on the gearbox and ecu as just bolting it in and connecting it How ever i would like to be wrong..

Over all i think its safe to say.. Just sell it and buy a new car

Doing the swap could cost you $2500 or more.
If you want to do this try to buy a damaged or dereg donor car as this is cheaper than buying all the bits seperately. Also you will get every bracket/wire/pump/bolt/brake bit you need and you can see how it fits before you put the part on your car.
Did you want to keep the auto or go manual?

-Would i gain much power from the conversion?
Engine model 3S-FE (auto)
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 140 ps (102.97 kw) / 6000 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 19.0 kg*m (186.33 N*m) / 4400 rpm
Engine model 3S-GE (auto)
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 170 ps (125.04 kw) / 6600 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 19.5 kg*m (191.23 N*m) / 4800 rpm
You would probably find that around town the 3sfe will be equal or better than 3sge as it has very similar torque at a lower rpm so it is more drivable.

-What parts would i need, minus the engine?
Loom, computer, fuel pump might be different as well. Talk the guy who will cert it before you start buying bits as they might want better brakes (i.e. disks all around). Also intake piping and filter box will be bigger. Check that the engine comes with all accessories as often bits won't bolt across.

-How much will labour cost?
I would guess that it would take about 24 hours labour at say $50 per hour = $1200 (this is presuming they don't put the new apprentice on the job and it takes twice as long!!!)

-How much do the 3S-GE engines cost from wreckers(approx.)?
Between $500 and $1200 depending on generation and km.

-Would it be worth doing this conversion or just buying a celica with twin cam?
Your 3sfe is a twin cam already. however it is optimised for economy instead of power. Probably slightly cheaper and heaps earier if you buy a 3sge celica.

-Will i need a cert?
Yes, cert required as you are changing the head and probably more than 20% increase in power. Cost approx $350

For the same cost you could end up with a turbo motor instead of N/A (normally aspirated). Just remember that a turbo engine has probably been thrashed and will have a much shorter life.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
