Hi all, rather interested about the Toyota 2jz-ge engine so just had some question about it. So what are they like reliability wise? What are the common problems? (If there are any)

Any one have some kind of sound files/videos of their NA motor in their supra etc? Just get an idea of what a non-turbo ones are like since pretty much all are of turbo 2jzs on the Internet.

Lastly what are the key parts to modify that can help to gain performance? Since its NA all I can think of headers, remaining exhaust, intake, safcII or a full Ecu w/tune? Any other real gains other than turbocharging it or supercharging it?

Reason for asking is im fairly interest in buying the NA 3.0GT Soarer at some stage next year. :wink:

the 2jzge is a very good strong reliable motor.
however, you will need to throw alot of money at it, if you want to make it fast in a soarer.
i would look at cams, exhaust, intake and a decent tune (after market ecu), that should see you with 300hp approx

Yeah I do understand that you need to spend alot more on it when compared to a turbo project to make similar power but still I prefer to stick with NAs. :wink: As fantastic as turbos are I just generally prefer a quick NA, its just a bit more of a challenge and decent project.

you should be able to get good results with it, and should have the reliability that goes with it.

Maybe join up to the supra mailing list at www.supras.org.nz

should be people on there that can point you in the right direction.

Yeah this is just an idea Ive had for a while, Originally I wanted to get another V8 soarer but lately after driving a few v8s for sale Ive been thinking of something a bit different like a 3litre model.

Theres just to many old tired 1991 v8s out there that have well over 200kms on the clock and need stuff doing to them where for slightly more money I could have a 1994-1996 I6 soarer which has far less kms and obviously needs less work.

Plus obviously v8s when pushed tend to eat through the gas, the I6 will still be bad but hopefully not as bad. :P

Ok, let me elaborate.....

Don't bother asking the same old questions about yet another car that you're going to be "buying" and already had answered on other forums and most of which could be found if you bothered looking

Also there are plenty of decent V8's out there, but you seem to have the idea that paying any more than $5k is far too much it's no wonder you can't find one.

No need to be nasty Daryn - But still I do see where your comming from as I did not buy the one I was plaining to a while back, However the reason was I didnt sell my car in time so lost the deal.

This new Idea will be done over time so I can save and buy the car straight way.

Your are correct for your reasoning though :P

I do agree there are decent V8s and yes you need to spend more than 5k to avoid a tired one. I completely agree with you. :wink: Still Im just saying in general the average v8 do need a bit of tidying up hence Id rather go for a newer 3 litre model - 'eventually'

I have a 2JZGE in a Hilux Surf, goes VERY well. About to turbo it. not that it needs turboing but one can never have enough power.....
250HP at the flywheel is achievable relatively easily. It all depends what you want to achieve with it as to how much it'll cost. They are a VERY solidly built engines.

I've just recently brought a 1998 Supra 2JZGE, reliability wise they are supposed to be very good, haven't heard of any common problems.

I will post some links to some videos of my engine in action once I get the digital camera all sorted!, mine has done bout 91K.

The stock exhaust system is very restrictive, so you would wanna look at getting it all replaced from the engine back,
+ the intake and tuning, i wud reckon around 300hp aswell.
Anything more than that you would probably wanna go with a turbo kit from HPS or someone similar, very expensive!

Stock 2jzge does btw 215-225hp I think (w/o w/ vvti)

Giant Tomato on the Toymods forum has done some serious work on a 2JZ-GE in andearly Corona MkII, have a search around there. Personally though you realy need a lighter car to have any real fun with it.

the 2jzge is a brilliant engine, no inherant design faults, at least as reliable as anything else on the road, but modd-ability wise you're not going to get far without a big $.

Stick with the v8's if you're going for n/a power on a budget.

2jz-ge engines are excellent - built like fort knox!
known problems - like the 1uz, as standard, they're a bit light on performance - they do go really well, but at the end of the day, they're a luxo cruiser (1500kg body doesn't help!)
It seems that most people who upgrade them just go straight for turbo kits - huge gains but reas $$ and you may as well have just brought a TT Soarer to start with.

IMO, the V8's are in exactly the same boat (ie: slack performers from stock) but at least you can upgrade the exhaust and get a nice note happening.

I know that the 2jz-ge soarers are generally much later model, but I would still be looking for a nice V8 rather than the 2j if you're going to insist on staying NA

Ive never actually compared a 1uz soarer to a 2jz-ge soarer fuel usage wise, but the 2j's seem to be fairly thirsty (I've owned a few now....)
They're not terrible, but they're not really an economy option :D

I know this isn't the first time we've had this convesation, and I'm still not 100% sure what exactly it is that you want exactly, but have you looked at that single turbo auto soarer in tauranga, which is on trademe for $7550? I don't know what the car is like, but if has been done properly it''ll be an awesome car - if its got even close to the 250rwkw hes claiming (quite realistic) then it'd make an NA soarer feel like its going backwards!
And probably still be quite civilised and fuel efficient when you're just cruising.

When I actually think theres quite number of toyotas with this motor, We get the supra, aristo, soarer, Altezza, Crown... Have I Missed any?

These questions have all be answered a million times over.
You have seen all the info on Soarer Central where it's freely available and more specific than any info you would get in TS.

You actually planning on buying and keeping a Soarer this time or just talking it up again...
