why does he need 400kw??, not that it would be an issue getting those numbers out of a 3T, would just cost moonbeams.

unless it is being built as a drag/race car, keep it period and original.i.e 3TG on 45's . if it an old school car with new tech power 3SGT or FJ20DET, wouldn't the SR as they weigh in heavier than either of the above, even with alloy block.

Interesting thread, I have often pondered what to do with my TA22 also, and after much thought it always ends back where it started.

the mighty 2tg as described before, maybe a 3t block, huge cams, sidies (possibily thottle bodies) lots of compression etc, Or as a step up and a bit of modernisation, the above setup but with a huge turbo on the side.

Or to keep it NA a beams 3sge and 6 speed, which for this guys application would be mint. There is plenty of after market parts for the beams 3s's with lots of turbo application parts, and if the guts are getting fully replaced anyway, why not go go the beams engine, its already rwd etc etc. and there is one on TM for a dollar reserve!.

Anyway

Cheers

One in neslon and another in Auckland,(hi juston and Worick, hope i can live up to the reputation you guys are building for me :p, hows it going. and nar my plans arent that long term, should have the Ra28 going by the end of the year, lol fingers crossed).
Its just a nice thing to do. If the guy has had the expereance putting a sr into every thing but the kitchen sink, then its high time he had a go at expanding his skill base. To to mention the fun of taking something good like a 3s and turn it into something better,aka.. a rear wheel drive 3s :)
sure there is a bit more work in it but you got to count the RESPECT Ull get from the job too.

good to hear from you man, is that other one your brothers? urs was a ta22 wasn't it

i still stay stick with a toyota motor due to classic status of the car keep it in the family, if it was something likme a hilux or ke30 or such where there still plenityful stick in a sr but for something like the cleica it needs to be keept in the family

oi mr procastionation no excuses get that thing finshed

Personally I dont really care what engine you put in them.

There are so few of them left on the road now.

Do what you want as long as it keeps the car roadworthy.

Exactly what I was thinking. You wont need huge numbers in that sort of car, if anything it'll ruin it. Stick with a period engine as fangsport says and see what you can get out of it. I reckon it'd be the better option

Yeah. I'd rather see one sitting at the lights, with a lumpy idle and the suck of the sidies, than hear it take off and "waaaa pssschh"!

Sure there are good merrits for putting in a period engine, but where not realisticaly going to be winning the non sr turbo resoning of this thread by suggesting a 2t with a couple of grand hidden on the in side is going to satisfy his guys taste for body numming hp, mmmmmm.
But certonaly wouldnt recomend using the 6 speed out of the altezza, have you guys seen ( or felt ) how the gear ratios are set up in the box. Not sutible for a light celica. First gear is borderline to low even for the altezza, imo.
So how we going gmacrae, are we talking your mate into it??? :D

I'd be swing towards a full house 18R-G with all the usual hi-po oldschool NA motor tricks.

But that's just me.

18RGTE is an option , built toyota tough they can handle big numbers , but not as much as a 3sgte ..

Anyone suggested a 1uz Turbo'ed v8 yet ?

Its been done a few times in oz with good effect

mr_procrastination, you must be Marcus's brother???? gutted he's giving you the car, i was keen as on buying it. thought i had talked him into it and then he tells me he's giving it to you to finish.

at least its going to be finished anyway, it will be good to see one more RA28 on the road.

seems to be quite a few early celica owners coming out of the woodwork in this thread. it must be getting towards time to organise a meet up again now there seems to be a few more around. i'll still have to hitch a ride though, my 23's still sitting in storage although just about to come out now i've got a garage and some spare coin. hopefully ready to go for next years cruise anyway.

and as for the original topic???? i agree that as long as its one more on the road. SR20's and 3SGTE's both have their good points and bad, its his car and you probably won't convince him any better. to do a decent 3S install you need to do some trimming anyway and afaic thats more sacriligeous than using an SR20 and being able to return it to normal (i know Marcus's one has got nothing cut but it sits way too high in the engine bay IMO)

cheers
Matt

LOL yea im lucky blood is thicker than money a, or i dont think id be getting it. Ill make sure he doesnt regret it a. He well probably get it back at some piont, you know, what goes around comes around.
And the 28 will not be getting anything cut! it will be changed to a multi coil pack and lose the dizzy, im a bit dissapionted i cut the 23 for the same prob, but can always fix it. So how much does my bro love me... what sort of coin was he passing up :P

Yea man id be keen to catch up with other ol celica owners for a cruse or meet or some thing.

Hey justin so what wrong with the 85???? the 28 got a gen3 3sge with nice new wedder( or were thay dotellows) sidedrafts, maybe i could find a lumpy idel too 8) mmmmm

Yea saw the gearset for the altezza 6sp on the trd sight, but i dont fancy selling my body parts on the black market. Would go nice with the dif gearset too, and be heaps better. But the boxes just arnt that flash any way, the old ladys one doesnt feel that good to use and if you read the forums every one says it.

nah, i work with him. just finished the same trip he did on Te Mana. we hadn't discussed coin, i just asked him to think about it and come up with a price and if i could afford it then i would have gone for it.

as for the 23 i'm wavering between 1UZ and 3SGE. its a pretty long term project although money is coming together at the moment so it should get a good portion of the work done on it within the next year or two.

those carbs Marcus has got are 45 DCOE sidedraught webbers, should have the engine putting out some good HP. Neil Fraser gets 220 HP with a longer manifold and the same carbs on his clubmans.

cheers

Now THIS is the best idea EVER for a RA23 Celica IMHO.

18R-G (Non-injection model) with 12:1 pistons and big cams, run 48mm Weber style throttle bodies and a good computer with coil pack ignition.

OLD SCHOOL.
