W57 Rattle when coming off throttle

Postby beeker » Fri Aug 11, 2006 8:55 pm

W57 Rattle when coming off throttle. Like a type of vibration.

It seems very much from inside the gearbox. You cant feel it through the stick though. Mounts are all good.

Ideas ?

If not clutch or release bearing it could be the xmember that's getting a tad old maybe and falling apart...?

Its a recently installed W57 into an AE86. New clutch went in at time of install. X member etc is all solid.

The W57 was purchased 2nd hand, so its a bit of an unknown quantity.

Assuming the noise is from within the gearbox, what would it be ?

Yeah, Solid centre clutch = gearbox noise/chatter that is not being dampened so you can hear it when the gears are not loaded.
I have had it in a few cars. Some people can't handle it and have to put a sprung clutch back in!

Another simple possiblity is what I had on my w55. The metal cup on the gbox end of the drive shaft/yoke kept coming loose.

Could feel it through the gear lever too.

Didn't figure that one out until I'd taken the lot out!

Yup. Struck that in my old EVO.
Put a std clutch in it to sell it as no one would by a car making a noise like that.

Perhaps not what you are experiencing, but in some solid mount boxes ive been in before, a lot of rattle etc is transmitted through a solid x member
Cant believe im still a member here.

I think i used the wrong term there, its not a solid mount.
Its all tight and well mounted. It still retains the AE86 gearbox rubber mount.

Does it only do it on deceleration? My last Cef did that, almost sounds as though theres' a bolt or collapsed bearing inside the gearbox? Is there a fair bit of vibration in the lever, but only on deceleration? I thrashed the tits off mine, with no problems, but it did whine a fair bit as well. Maybe open it up and have a look?

yes, only when deaccelerating. You cant feel anything through the gear stick though.

Yeah. I'd put my money on a dodgy bearing.

I've decided to pull it down and do the bearings, so fingers crossed.

If it has a solid centre clutch I would not waste your time doing the bearings, been there and done that! If it has a solid centre clutch (which you will know when you pull it out) replace the plate with a sprung centre and see if it goes away. If you heard the noises my car makes you would swear I need a new engine/gearbox/diff and suspension too!

If you heard the noises my car makes you would swear I need a new engine/gearbox/diff and suspension too! But these noises are all meant to be there. You just can't hear them in a road car as everything is designed to be smooth and quiet so everything is dampened - springs in the clutch - rubber suspension mounts - smooth LSD's - everything!

Of course if it has a sprung centre clutch then it could well be a bearing! Also your driveshaft may be too long.
