Manual quiet than autos?

Does anyone else think manual cars are quieter than autos?
My old Subaru was a 1.5l auto, with huge RPS system (yes throw stones at me), and it was $&#$% loud, and my Skyline has a big bore on the back of it (more stones), and its auto.
Both had silencers,

Now the WRX dad just imported, manual turbo etc, with full kakimoto system, is louder outside, but doesnt drone inside? and is way quieter than my subaru or skyline, but the kakimoto systems bigger?

Is this just the exhausts design, ie not droney, or are manuals quieter?

the only thing i could think of that could make a difference between auto and manual on the engine would be load.

i think it really depends on the exhaust. i know manual 20vs with big exhausts sound just as crap as auto 20vs with big exhausts.

Transmission is totally irrelevant, a turbo car will generally be quiter than N/A because the turbo is in the path of the exhaust, and quitens it down some what.

So it comes down entirely to the Engine, the Exhaust specs, and the in cabin deadening.

Transmission wont affect it.

The difference in internal noise would be the sound deadening and possibly the accoustics of the cabin too.

transmission DEFINANTLY DOES affect how a cars exhaust sounds!!

Autos tend to sound alot more droney, as when they stall up against the converter while accelerating they sit at one rev point under load and this creates the trademark drone of a smaller capacity auto with a loud exhaust.

of course manuals can drone too, but as they tend not to sit at a single rev point while under load (ie: engine rpm increases as vehicle speed does) they tend not to sound so bad.

none of this affects the actual volume of the exhaust as such, but does make a HUGE difference to the percieved volume and of course the sound 'quality'

Exhaust shops will usually ask if its auto or manual when recommending an exhaust upgrade for this very reason, because the transmission greatly affects the operating charactistics of the engine, resonances etc etc.

A 'JASMA' approved exhaust has to meet noise level regulations etc in Japan, so is going to be a lot better than some piece of crap trademe bling barrel.

That's more than likely the difference.

Good muffler > cheap muffler

My JASMA approved muffler on my Skyline was louder than my bling bling RPS system :lol:
