KE25/KP61 and AE86/TT142 Ball Joints??

Postby KE25-KP30 » Mon Aug 14, 2006 12:41 pm

Hey, I'm in mid stages of putting RA63 Struts(Same as cressida, tt142 etc etc) in the KE25.
I've got a small issue tho. Everything bolts up fine and would work perfectly, except the RA63 bottom arm is about an inch shorter than the KE25 one, so the bottom of the wheel sits hardout under.
Anyway, the whole reason for this post is, I had a brain wave.
AFAIK, the BJ(ball joint) on the KE25 and KP61's are the same size(the shaft piece) and so long as the shaft diameter on the AE86 and RA63/TT142 are the same, then I can use these: {Ah, Can't just find them, but they're a sleeve which fits into the AE86 steering arm, making it fit onto the KP61 BJ}, and thus, keeping my original KE25 bottom arms!!
Sorry about the long winded post, but any replies or even different ideas will be much appreciated!
Cheers :)

KP61 uses the smaller balljoint, http://technotoytuning.com/products/sta ... hings.html that is the product youre looking for I assume, use one of them, with the RA63 Steering arm, on your existing bottom arm.

The downsides, KP and KE25 Steering arms are 108mm C2C, RA63, depending if theyre powersteering or not are 145mm(non PS) or 125mm(ps) Which will result in less lock and slower turning response, will be fine for a street car, but useless for racing or dirfting.

Other one is, RA63 Steering arms give about 0.5 degree -1 degree positive camber when fitted to a corolla or KP, this is not good for handling. To counter this there are a few different methods, some make thier lower arm adjustable using a rose joint, put up with it, or go to 60mm coilovers with adjustable camber plates.

But if its just a tough street car needing a brake upgrade, then go for it.

If ya need anymore help post and ill help ya out.

Oh great, cheers for clearing that up. I'm converting to R&P as well just because it's far better than box so i'l be changing lots of stuff under there anyway. Is cert needed for rose jointed bottom arms? I'd thought about this, but i'm sorta put off the idea if I have to cert the whole car just for bottom arms(If you get my drift!!)
Cheers :)
Oh just wondering also, could I cut a section out of my steering arms to make them shorter is is this kind of a no-no?

Its going to need cert anyway so before you waste any time or money talk to a certifier first.

Suspension and Steering "Shows signs of welding or heating after original manufacture" are the words straight from the LTSA, so rose jointing and Rack & Pinion conversion both require a cert from my understanding.

Pretty much a no-no, the welding is required to be X-rayed and certed, more trouble than its worth, and imagine if it broke 8)

But apparantly back in the day it was the done thing, not now adays though.

You could get an adaptor RCA made up to bolt the KP steering arm to the RA Strut, but will be costly.

Cheers for the input.

What motor are you putting in? And how much power do you expect to be making?

Ah, sorted it. Went back to the wreckers today and found bottom arms off a GX61 and they fit beaut. They're a bit longer than the factory '25 ones, so it's got about the right amount of negative(bottom out??) camber.

[I would add before and after pictures here, but photobucket's down at the mo, so i'l update later]

As for engine, it's just a 4K, but it's not 'just' a 4k :D haha, umm, 4k, bored out, balanced, lightened flywheel, ported, polished, planed head, double valve springs, F18A(Power from 4-8k,Quite an old cam) Kelford, and sidedraughts (Plus maybe more which I've forgotten).
It's in the starlet being run in at the mo, and when I get the KE25 sorted, i'l switch it over. As for power, I guess it's anyone's guess. (Hopefully over 100HP!!)
The brakes may be overkill, but I'd rather be Under powered and Over braked, rather then vice versa.
