Dumb question, but it is a real garrett turbo correct??? Not a copy/clone. Have seen plenty of the copy ones die very very easily.

Interesting you mention the wastegate. Friend has the same tial wastegate (clone looking thing off trademe). Spring was way too strong, had to push it down with both hands.

Turbo sounded like it was compressor surging, but still ran fine and didn't over boost. Until one day the turbo just siezed and bent the shaft Could not work out wtf did it.

The tag numbers match the Garrett web site, plus it spooled like a bb should. How else would I be able to tell?

The internal spring gave a perfect 7psi on my gauge and 8psi on the dyno. Perfect straight line till rev cut. But yeah it is hard to put the head back on the external.

yeah i have the same, mines a 6psi spring and need two thumbs to push the valve open, it's meant to be tight like that, and i've told him how to sort the spinning top, as mine did the same. take it apart and tighten up the nut inside. it still works perfectly. it does NOT effect the boost in anyway though.

i've allways had a restrictor in the fitting before the turbo on mine. its about 1mm i think, so bigger than the .8mm one thats built into the turbo. was told buy a turbo guy there was no need to run a restrictor due to .8mm one built into the turbo core. but have also read other places, that they still suffer with high oil pressure and a restictor was needed.
ended up leaving it in it in place and hoped for the best..

Did you find the boost leak?

I had a similar problem trying to get past 18psi on my car originally.
Luckily the turbo never oversped and survived.

no i havent had a chance yet. i suspect you were right and it was leaking out the bov , as the rest of the piping system is quite securely joined, with lips on all pipes etc.
i think it was the dyno time that did the damage as i hadnt really run high boost at all since i got it back , i was being cautious for that very reason, i wanted to confirm what the issue was.
it all makes sense now after the fact  as soon as you said the issue you had it all sounded very familiar , and i know people who have had this turbo make more than 20psi for short periods so i didnt think it was the absolute limit of the turbo.

The turbo I run is a non BB version of a modifoied t28.
When I fixed my boost leak I have had the boost gauge past 30psi on the track, which is way above the 18 I was struggling for.
Just a shame the fuel could not keep up with the 30psi.
you could feel it go lean and slow down.

I severly doubt it if 20 psi is anywhere near the capabilities of the turbo.
Maybe efficiency zone, but not limit.

Yea just another note on the external wastegates, I got a genuine Tial with a 9 psi spring and it takes two hands to move the think. Shame reading about these garrett BB dieing, Im thinking of getting one so it doesnt biuld my confidance up
Arr well must be heaps of people with no probs from them. Dam expensive to replace though.
