You mean spark plug well seals

Spark Plug Wells Filled With Oil

Q. Hi Vincent, Thanks for the putting all the information in about.com, it is really a great site! I got lot of useful info from there. Recently, I pull out the spark plug wire and found there is engine oil in the plug hold. I really worry about the problem and would like you advise. Is it a big problem I should go fix right away?

Thanks again!
Sawloo

A. There is an O-ring that seals the spark plug well and keeps oil from leaking into it. As with any valve cover gasket, it will start to leak over time. Sometimes tightening the valve cover bolts will stop the leakage, but more often than not the valve cover gasket, and well seals, will need to be replaced.

The seals will come with the valve cover gasket set. I would get it fixed as soon as possible. The oil will cause the spark plug boot to swell and lead to a misfire. This will certainly hurt engine performance as well as a possible engine fire.

Seals ?

Postby jondee86 » Thu Aug 17, 2006 8:39 pm

Never seen any seals down the plug hole on a 4AGE. The plug connector
is a pretty snug fit, so maybe that seals the gap between the plug and the
head to stop crap, oil etc., getting down the hole ?

Yeah, the 4AGE seems to have 2 cam covers as well. Taking mine off the other day, I had to;

Unbolt the black plastic plug lead cover on top of the motor;

Unbolt the second cover (the bit the plug boot sits in);

And that gets you to the plugs. If they're filled with oil, I would say that your cam covers need tightening, as mine did. I found that out the hard way when I took it for its' first fang, with too much oil, and a blocked breather hose.. my car still smells like burnt oil, lol!

Oil around plugs....

Postby jondee86 » Sun Aug 20, 2006 11:05 pm

If it is the plugs closest to the oil filler cap, you will often find it is
just the dribbles of oil that get spilled when topping up the oil :oops:

Otherwise, as already suggested, just make sure the cam cover nuts
haven't loosened off.
