It's to get 'Boy racers' off the street and onto the track, so they can have a taste and hopefully join the club, and to let anyone with a safe car and licence have a run on a race track...

But I still prefer days regulated to club members, just because they are more sensibly and actually know how to treat other cars on the track.

"Clubsport days" = Clubsport Basic Permit by MSNZ.

MSNZ regulations (Manual 33), page 163.

"A competition licence is not required. However all competitors, save for those entering their first or second Autcross, or Standing Sprint (single car) Event, shall be members of either a Member club or Associate Member club".

I don't have an opinion in either direction. However, it is clearly written in the big book of stuff you have to know, that you have to belong to a car club to play at this event.

Better to tell him now, so he can sort it out, rather than have him turn up on the day without this, and either have to run around sorting stuff on the day, or be turned away.

If he turns up with no membership, and gets himself killed or injured, the club, organisers, and the sport could potentially get their arses sued off. Nobody wants that.

Well they have entry forms there on the day to give "instant memberships" to non-members if they need it.

It is effectively supposed to be "Single car sprints" or something to that effect but running un-timed etc it is more like a test day and ends up turning into racing due to the difference in power / driver skills.

Well that's easy then, if they have day membership.

To clarify, standing sprint, single car is a standing 400m ... "bent sprint" is a single car sprint around a race track.

Hmmm, dunno. Nobody has ever said anything about it one way or another, and I don't recall it ever really being talked about at any of the AGM's.

I recall in the dark, distant past that day memberships were frowned upon by MotorSport NZ, I think it was because clubs were using them to get around paying capitation levies etc. I haven't heard of any change in policy but then again (as Leon said there has been nothing said against them for a long time either).

You could do a "day" membership which is actually a discounted full-year membership without any voting rights at AGMs, magazine etc but record it as a membership for accounting purposes.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

Well I've been here for four and a bit years, and I haven't heard anyone here venture an opinion on the subject (three different general managers in that time). I guess if a club did try to use it as a tool to avoid the capitation levy (which is a WHOPPING $2.50/year) then that would be bad. But then again, I guess you just count any day members as being a member of your club, and pay the $2.50 with the money you've taken off them for day membership.

I personally don't have an opinion either way, I can see the pro's of the situation while wearing my car club president hat, because it gets people to try events. That said, our club subs are only $30/year so we don't ever get asked for day membership, and if we did, I don't have a clue what we'd charge.

Nobody at any of the motorsport clubs AGCM has said much about day memberships that I recall. Certainly if they have, the discussion was such a non event that I can't remember it!

Also it was probably more of an issue in the old days of closed club events. This was where if a club was running a Bentprint (for an example) it could invite up to 3 other clubs to join in, if you wanted to compete and didn't belong to one of those clubs then you had to join the club running the event. Day memberships became useful because you then didn't have to fork out for a full membership to multiple clubs just to run at their events.

Luckily MotorSport NZ saw the light a few years back (probably quite a few actually, thinking about it!) and changed it so people could compete at any club's event regardless of the club they belonged to. Quite what this piece of off-topicness has to do with doing a ClubSport sprint as one of your first 2 events I'm not quite sure :lol:
