un paid rego you will need to pay, but there shouldnt be any costs.
and if rego is still on the car, you should get a refund

Depending how overdue the rego is they sometimes wipe it when you hand in the plates.

if you hand in the plates before the computer deregs it then you dont have to pay the back-charges. no plates means you have to pay back charges before they let you dereg it.

"sell" the car to a mate (change the ownership) and put the rego on hold.
Try to avoid dereging a car unless it really is beyond all hope.
If you dereg a car it's value goes pretty much to zero.
You will still owe $ for the rego but it will be worth heaps more.
