When running a car in...

Postby mr pad » Tue Aug 22, 2006 1:08 pm

Motor has done around 250kms now.. Taking it pretty easy but did give it some gas yesterday...

Quite a bit of blue smoke as its revving (didnt go past 5.5k). Is that normal for a motor thats still quite new, only gave it its second oil change yesterday (after 250kms).. oil is nice and clean and all that.

I wonder if the dizzy might be out by a tooth.. it seems to rev a lot happier than when it was really new but im guessing its going to be quite tight for the next 500kms or so?

Ideas etc?

if the motor has been rebuilt properly it should not smoke from start, in fact you should of not taken very easy, but you have to load it up in different of rpms in first kms. It is really important to have engine doing it's work in first kms as this way it ensures that the rings are hard against the bores and run in properly, if you take it lightly, glazing will occure without piston rings taking shape of the bore (and vice versa), thus blue smoking. Best way to run in the engine is to take it to track with lots of tight corners. Also make sure you do lots of engine braking, as this helps with running in process. Don't listen to old schoolers saying that you should take it lightly as this applies to bearings and other rotating parts, it used to be the way but these days engine use different matereals and tolerances, so bearing run in the first few kms.

BIG mistake. I ran in my engine a week ago and was doing 6000 rpm within 10 kms. You need high cylinder pressures to press the rings out onto the walls to enable them to bed in, with vacuum also as sergei mentioned.

Give it balls now, but you may be too late.

$&#$% balls. Im going for a hill thrash after work. $&#$% it.

i find it hard to believe that its needed to rev a motor most of the way out to run it in proper, cant imagine many soccer mums wanting to race their vans etc...

as soon as it had warmed up i drove it fairly hard for a brand spanker, took it on the street, did a few warm up runs in second, rev it up to 3k, let the engine braking do its thing on the way down etc...

so the dizzy being a tooth out... what effect would that have on the motor?

just poor tuning symptoms etc. timing makes a huge differene to how your car runs. check timing with a timing light too see if it really is out.

and 3k = nothing, I'd be at least giving it 4k.
and yuh, people on here are assuming you're nanaing the shit outta it.
what happened to the old engine? could be exhaust with a fair bit of oil residue in it? new engine = heating exhaust and burning it out.
guess you'll have to see if it sorts itself out etc, and what your oil consumption's like.

Ran my 20v in round the old Taupo track. First couple of laps went gently to about 4-5k making sure that temp and oil pressure was OK. Next 5 got it nicely up to 6.5k and by the end of the next 5 was up to 8k. Doesn't use any oil or smoke. At 1.4 km a lap it was an 18km run in :D
See ya

Yeah... theres def something not right about it, was going ok up the hills, seems to make ok power till about 5.5k and it just dosn't feel like its making more power, instead its kind of the opposite....
