Slight graunch or knock noise when hitting 3rd gear fast???

Postby quicklvn » Mon Aug 21, 2006 4:50 pm

I have been having some trouble with my AE101 when changing qucikly into 3rd gear (ie racing it at meremere). It makes a sort of bang noise when entering third not really a graunching and it only does it when quick shifting (when changing normally its fine). Now I know pretty much nothing about gearboxes but I've heard this knid of thing can be cause by the syncros being out of line ,unbalanced etc. Is this true? however its not a graunch like usual so i'm kind of stumped.

Oh and just quickly, my car has started leaking and it looks as if its trickling down the inside of the firewall and seeping through the carpet into the drivers footwell. Is there any standard places AE101s generally leak from?

Cheers guys

no, it sounds like the normal c series gearbox third gear syncro

only fix is to replace the syncro, and itll do it again if you race it

on my 6speed it does that when I down shift to second on cold, and up/down shift in 5th. C series are notorious for sinchro wear...

ok thats cool, I don't thrash it or anything, just change fast when dragging so it should hold out (hopefully).

Mine did it as soon as the box was rebuilt... i.e with a new syncro on 3rd gear. Sometimes when going to 3rd it will just lock and wont go in no matter how hard you push... back to neutral, clutch again, try again.

I have weird problems with 3rd gear in ma ae101 as well, sometimes it gets stuck in gear and requires a good yank. Once it decided not to go in on a friend of mine, we had to come to a stop before it would go in...
Though never had problems with 2nd gear which is usually the one that is more problematic Ive heard

2nd gear is a symptom of the stop light grand prix

Should last ages then if you only do it while dragging. I used to race at masterton a fair bit and did the odd trip to meremere as well never had a major problem with mine although a couple of months before i sold it it developed a weird habit of not being able to come down out of 5th easily, took it as being a possible bent selector fork on 4th gear or something like that. Oh and mine always used to go in with a bang, from in the car at least but when listening to it on video playback it was probably just the exhaust and things happening with the launch control/flat shift.

Interesting.....

My 2nd gear is rooted, but 3rd is perfect....

But the fxgt which I know has been thrashed to hell and back is perfect on all gears...

Oh yeah, on the leaking, its probably your heater core leaking. If it water/antifreze in the foot well?

Could be your heater core leaking. I dont your car but genraly they can be a pain in the ass. Quite a few times ive found water leaks around that area to be well hidden rust holes.

3rd gear is usually the gear to get the most thrashing ive found. My T50 box in my corolla does the same... :(

with regards to the water leak, It's just straight water and it only happens when the car is in the pissing down rain so dont think its the heater core.

The best way to find the leak is to run a hose over the car while some one with a light inside has a good look for it. You may have to pull the carpet up around the fire wall witch is easy, or it may be coming from the A piller (around the door hinge etc).
