Random noises on 3SGTE...

Hey guys.
Got a strange noise on my gen 2 3SGTE in my ST185. It sounds like a squealing alternator belt, but only occurs when the clutch is disengaged. It very obvious at idle, but i have heard it faintly while driving, but only while clutch is disengaged.

Anyone encountered this problem before? Its not so much worrying, just highly irritating!

Had this same problem in my ae101, push the clutch in and get a high pitched scream kinda crap, it came and went, but hasnt come back since my clutch got reaplced, someone told me it was the thrust bearing or sumthing?

Nah this one happens when your foot aint on the clutch. I know of one other ST185 owner who seems to have the same problem

shit im way to tired, yea clutch out it would do it. but only with clutch out in neutral, if car was moving ther wasnt any scream

my mate in chc had a similar problem with his st185. turned out to be buggered input bearings in the gearbox caused by a circlip that had come adrift and worked its way through everything.

Damn, it doesnt look like it will be an easy fix. Ill just have to put up with it

err i imagine if somthings come loose in the gearbox you wont just want to put up with it, Perhaps get it looked at before ya seize the gearbox.

Yeah i probably will eventually, but at the moment the 'box is mint, and having no problems. Hopefully it turns out to be just something thats loose somewhere.

It may be 'mint' at the moment but that doesn't mean its not dying. If its a bearing and it seizes, which it will then its an immediate new gearbox and you'll be picking your old gearbox up off the road. Get it checked out.

It happens in Terranos every about 150,000kms and sometimes in Hiluxes. I know of someone who drove all the way from Invercargill in a Hilux with a horsefloat on the back starting in 2nd and then driving in 4th gear (4th gear doesn't use layshaft bearing) and they got home to chch fine. Next day their wife thought it would be ok to just pop into town and the bearing failed, they needed a new gearbox at about $1500.
